Woodrow Weatherman of 'Corrosion of Conformity' plays one.
Corrosion are Southern rock Metal band from New Orleans.
Singemonkey, that Angus is truly breathtaking.

The neck's a '57 Classic. The bridge is also a '57 Classic, but modified to Mr. Young's specifications. An amazing sounding pickup that one.

I quite like the (to me) rather "aggressive, attacking" look of the SG ........... (if that even makes sense......) I played one a long time ago, belonged to a friend, but it may not have been set up properly (to my taste), had heavy gauge strings on, and I could not get to grips with the thing .......
@Singe, if I had the money, and there was no 513 on my wish list, I'd buy your SG!!! I think it's awesome.........
Who can argue with what Angus does with the machine!!!!!

Some more notable SG players...Derek Trucks, Jimmy Herring (besides his custom strat), one of the guys in Lynrd Skynrd.

I think it was an intriguing guitar for people who wanted to play fast - until the rise of super-strats, that is. So now it's loved for it's unique tone and satanic, rock 'n roll looks.

And we haven't mentioned Robby Krieger of The Doors, he has a signature SG.

SG was THE guitar I always aspired to own/ play. Fell i love with it because my idol (Zappa) played one.
Then I got the opportunity to play one and my whole world came crashing down. Loved the looks, HATED the playability.
Still heartbroken really :'(

Interesting...what is it you did not like about the guitar (in terms of playability). I know some players feel they are a bit unbalanced 'round one's neck (weight wise that is).
Reinhard
They can be neck heavy, usually cured by a broad strap.

I was used to my right hand picking further back on the body quite close to the bridge, with the SG its a lot closer to the neck than I was comfortable with ( because of the position of the bridge), neck joint was alet down for me, just felt a bit strange, found it neck heavy too.. and i guess this caused a psychological block regarding the playability.. I still get bummed when i try one.

They're less neck heavy with a vibrato tailpiece. And, like Reinhard says, the right strap clears that right up. No issues with the bridge placement myself. The neck joints slightly strange, but then so would a Strat's be if I'd never played one or similar.
Neck balance aside, it's a lot easier to get to the upper frets than on a Les Paul. To me they're a little light, but a lot of strats are that light - although my Pacifica is significantly heavier than my SG. All, in all though, Gibsons are really not about ergonomics, as far as I'm concerned. Maybe an ES335 is a comfortable guitar. But, for the rest, you largely sacrifice ergonomics for great looks and great tone.

re SG's being awkward to play ........i really think 'modern" guitarists are too spoilt by having even the mid priced instruments have amazing necks , well balanced and extremely playable ......
many strats , tele's and even a few les pauls and SG's from the 70's that were not the best instruments in playability but wow the tone was awesome in talented hands . like the mention of zappa and his SG
i can clearly recall when the first/early ibanez shred guitars hit ( in the 80's) and all the guitarists sold their "hard" to play fenders and heavy gibsons for the fast necked well balanced, medium weight ibanez's .....of course only to regret it years later ? at one stage in 80's one could buy 2nd hand fenders and gibsons for next to nothing cos no one wanted em........ then the revival ......... how the wheel turns
anyway just wanting to say not all classic( as in rock classic NOT classical) guitars are super slick low action fast necked instruments and one had to put some effort into playing them but they always had the distinctive tones ........
Reinhard
Frank Marino really coaxes some cool tone from his SG

I don't want an sg bec every body has them. Wherever I look there is a sg in somebodies arms.
I personally think that applies significantly more to Les Pauls. Now that is everyone is mentioning the odd feel to the guitar, i do remember playing one a while back and thinking it was pretty weird but i thought it was just very badly set up at the shop :\ I definitely wouldn't say no if someone offered to give me one though, i do love the look of them ?

Strats, Teles, V's, Explorers, Les Pauls.......Where are the SG's??? ???

A couple of people on the forum have 'em. Quite a polarising guitar, I think.
*Drool* I want. ?

This is it with me. I hate a guitar that constantly needs reshuffling.

lol.......Maybe I'm just fussy. I have to admit that my buddies ESP LTD SG is a stunning twanger.......but it's been rodded to within an inch of its life.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe tearing it up on a SG, check from 1:25 for the solo

I dig Rosetta Tharpe.
