I would love to see Andre Meyer featured on something like this. He was the main songwriter and lead guitarist for the rock band Factory who recorded probably the best ever electric guitar album ever in SA called Industrial Rock in the early 1990's. You can download the entire album free of charge from MySpace here at
http://www.myspace.com/factory247 Just listen to his playing. I don't know whether there has ever been a guitar album recorded locally that features guitar playing like this. It sounds like a demo and very dated now but just listen to the guitar playing man - its fantastic!
He's also very active locally in Cape Town and currently part of another legendary band called Late Final. I saw them play at the Argus cycle tour last year and he just blew me away again!
Ask anyone who knows Factory and they'll tell you this guy is a legend.
I agree. The three golden boys of Cape Town rock guitar have always been John Mair (The Sweat band), Nico Burger (All Night Radio/Slap 'n Tickle) and Andre Meyer (Factory/ Late Final). Of those three Andre is the soul remaing member of that exclusive club.
I saw all three once on the same concert in Stellenbosch, all three trying to outdo the other. Great playing! I also remember Andre using a Strat from the 1960's with a scalloped fretboard. To my knowledge he was the first Cape Town guitarist that did this, long before the days of Yngwie Malmsteen.
John Mair was definitely the most visual, what with the guitar burning antics and playing behind his head and so forth. Nico was the blues specialist and Andre was/is the combination of the two but with a lot more finesse and feel.
