Reputation for skill and quality combined with fantastic woods... I bet Marc Mainguard's guitars aren't exactly cheap either.
In the USA you'll pay not exactly Kevin Ryan money but not exactly peanuts either. $8000 and up depending on the woods I should think.
I think you'd pay a good whack for one of Linda Manzer's instruments or an Ohlson. A Ferrington? I think you'd be in for a good whack there too. The Better 5/8 and I were at a Martin Simpson gig last year and I got a chat with him after the show. He was playing guitars by Stefan Sobell at the time. You have to love his sense of humour! He says to me "You can play one just like this. 8000 pounds."
George Lowden is giving them away by comparison - you'll pay about 4000 pounds for his signature models and about 2700 for a "regular" Lowden, and I can't see how in terms of quality and playability you're going to get much better. What you don't get with Lowden is bling. Standard models don't have a gloss finish. Everything is in the wood and the workmanship. No vines of life up the fingerboard or anything like that.
