What's your day job/trade?

What do you do to pay for all the guitar gear? It seems many people around here are IT guys... Would be interesting to see the demographics... I am a fresh graduate mechanical science engineer (mechatronics major). I'm currently consulting in the industrial/consumer embedded electronics industry (consumer product design/injection molded plastics etc.) and doing my master's part time.

Noooo MoreCowBell don't do it!!! While I was serving my time in IT I came across too many empty souls, ex musicians that got trapped in the cube farms... and their stories were all sadly the same... how they would just do a couple of months of consulting to earn a bit more cash to buy a better guitar or another FX pedal and they would be back on the road again... but it hardly ever went that way, the next thing they were trading there Marshall Stacks for fridges and stoves, and that was only the start... next they would begin to lust after big screen TVs and brand new cars... the ones that had been there a while could no longer be trusted they would stab each other in the back over a measly promotion... I met this old crone that had been there the longest. His once wavy long hair had shrivelled into a crew cut and the bandanna that once graced that hair had been washed and pressed in to the yoke of capitalism, a frigging neck tie and as the last ounce of humanity drained from his body he spat at me "I was a musician once but music doesn't put food on your table or a wife in your bed."

? alan you obviously been there.......

well music biz has changed a lot in recent years and NOW is a bussiness genre just like any other with enough opportunities to "put food on the table and a wife in your bed" i think there's more serious opportunities with descent salaries than there were 10 - 30 yrs ago...... and these days one can make a pretty descent living even if one is not a star and famous which in the "old" days was the only way to make money . but the criteria of having talent/skills/a product people want........ be it in the studio or on the stage has not changed..... and a fabulous thing is most young muso's these days actually study music as in a degree course . so the skill level at entry level into the industry is rising which is awesome....... and as a fulltime muso for all my life i agree with what they said in the classics "there's no bussiness like show bussiness"

Lol! Thanks for the warning... I'll always be a musician first though - love and need it WAY to much to brush it under the carpet. Won't ever let myself get stuck in a crappy corporate environment either (I like being my own boss WAY too much! ?). Doing the Masters mainly so that I can learn a bunch of different programming languages, and the basics of networking etc (all of which I, alarmingly enough, find really interesting), to support my music management/admin business so it's all part of a sneaky, bigger and musical plan!

Who else reckons Reinhard should do some research and get a paper published called, "Les Paul Back?" We'd pile on the karma. Also, I'm sure Pete Townsend would do an interview. He loves complaining.

I find it interesting that when I was born my first career hadn't even been invented! I started out as a Cobol programmer (hated it)- left that and got into Textile Design (for many years) - work dried up - and am now on the road to being a kiddie's illustrator.

Can you imagine that some of the kids running around todays' careers don't even exist yet!! ?

That is interesting... you should read a book called Outliers if you like that sort of thought.

I am in Digital Brand Management. A Fancy title for online marketing, advertising and strategy.

I will - Googled it - looks good.

Ah, I can add on to my "trade" now, as I'm teaching guitar now too. Yippie. I also forgot to add that I paint as well. I'm sure I've mentioned that a trillion times already anyway.

Quite a lot of guitarists seem to be artists of some type or into IT in some way ... Maybe we're middle brainers - left and right brains getting used here if there's something in that theory ?
