Would be interested to hear what you guys think...
My local heroes include:

Carlo Mombelli (Prisoners of Strange)
Brydon Bolton (upright bass - don't know what he's playing in at the mo)
JC Visser (Mr Cat & the Jackal)

Schalk Joubert ... period. Too many bands and sessions to mention!
Craig Owen ..not to many may have heard of Craig but he been around the block a long long time..
not even sure if he's alive or gigging but check out the upright and electric player Spencer mbadu ...he's more jazz and jazz fusion but an incredible player ..... back in the dark years of apartheid he was already playing major jazz festivals around the world and is friends(aquaintances) and played with chick corea on occassion so i've been told....... no idea whats he's up to since . but cape town was his home......and i last saw him play there in late 90's...

Johan Buys (currently in the UK playing bass and Stick with Limahl).
            Bakhiti Kumalo (of course...)
an lest i forget ..a couple of years ago ...quite a few now my lovely gal (now wife) and i went to Grahamstown arts festival and saw a show about world music .. a big dark bassist (epitomy of a bassit in a smoky jazzy nighclub eh) was playing ...gito baloy (sp) ...had the pleasure of meeting him afterwards ...what a great guy .. and such a damn shame

did catch up with him again a couple of times afterwards an he always remembered me as the grahamstown festival guy ...

Is he the one that played with Paul Simon on the Graceland album?
Don't know what makes or breaks a bassist skill wise but i like the Lark bassist. He has awesome hair, its basically a lion mane, and a headless bass so that's win in my books ?

Anything to do with Lark is cool... ?

Simon "Fuzzy" Ratcliffe (no relation - although we worked together at one point, I'm the one who gave him the nickname, although he was also known as monseur bouffant for a short while). He's an even better flautist (Ian Anderson style - anyone remember Celtick rockers Ravenwolf?) and a topnotch studio engineer too.
Sipho Gumede (RIP) was another legend ... saw him so many times in the 80s. Incredible player.

Yup. Sorry it's actually Bakithi . Originally with Stimela IIRC and has done work with Gloria Estefan, Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Harry Belafonte, Cyndi Lauper and Laurie Anderson, amongst others.

How could I forget. Their dummer was (and still is) the biggest asshat I've ever met!

I've always really liked the bass chops and good vibes of our very own forum member Gareth (Sherwood). Check out Cpt band SHA.

Don't think I know him. Who was it? I remember the later bassist (Adam Shapiro - guitarist Dave Shapiro's brother) was actually a much better drummer than the drummer they had.

Hey MoreCowCell have you come across the late Jaco Pastorius yet ?

A little birdie told me last night that he's just started a new trio with Albert Frost and Kevin Gibson on drums. Woohoo!

Indeed I have... ? One of the all time bass all stars!
Molefi Makananise from Blk Jks, Arno Blumer from the Nude Girls (not flashy but solid), and Goldfish!! Dominic Peters or David Poole, not sure which one on electric double bass... kicks!
