Let's also remember here that Mick Jagger isn't much of a singer. It was all attitude, looks, sex-appeal, and approach. He has a very limited voice compared to almost everyone else mentioned besides Jim Morrison. I love 'em both. But the classic rock guys weren't all great singers either.
Well yes... "front man" and "singer" are not the same thing.
Linda Thompson was a really good singer (still is, when her voice is working, which, sadly, isn't all the time) but not much good as a front person. Jon Anderson was lucky to play big venues in a band with lots of lights and a cape-wearing keyboard player in the band.
I kind of think that the "front person" is really a stadium rock role. You know Bono, Axl Rose, Jagger, Jon Bon Jovi, Robert Plant, Springsteen (who might get my vote) are all adept at the big gestures that reach across big distances.
