Hi from a "noobie" to the site and to playing a guitar.
So new that I actually haven't even got a guitar yet :-[ but I have some ideas for Christmas and know what I want. I have wanted to learn to play for about 30 years (that gives my age away) and in the New Year I am going to try. It isn't a midlife crisis thing because I have already had that.
I am from Maritzburg and my other interest is off-road motorcycles.
I look forward to "meeting" you guys and lady(ies). I found the site yesterday morning and have already found some interesting stuff on here.
According to the forum rules we need to state any "affiliations" so just to clear things up.....I have no affiliation to that other "oke" formerly know as Prince.

Hey man, welcome. So, what guitar do you have in mind?
PeteM
Welcome prince. Acoustic? electric? What style of music are you wanting to play?

LOL. I know what you mean - I think. I bought a guitar when I was.... well if I took my shoes and socks off I'd still have needed plenty more digits to count my age.
Welcome, and good luck. TAKE LESSONS - you can shorten your start up time considerably that way.

Thanks for the welcome guys.
Type of music I want to play - (long term target) - Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, The Who, Uriah Heep etc. so definitely an electric. I want an American Standard Strat, a complete overkill but it will last forever and I will never have to upgrade it. Problem is if you import one, you get ripped off on the shipping costs, also the online shop where I found one won't ship direct to SA (and it seems like a Fender stipulation). Otherwise maybe a MIM bought locally. Andrew was advertising a Strat so if it is still available I may take a look at that.
Lessons are going to be a definite.

Hey Prince. Welcome.
Just remember, guitars are not like bikes. They don't deteriorate and wear significantly over time. So buy your strat 2nd hand off ebay, pay $100 shipping, and your guitar will not only be just as ready to go as a brand new Strat, but it'll have that played-in look which is usually a good thing in the guitar world - like worn in jeans. ?
Furthermore, once a guitar takes the drop in price when you take it out of the showroom, it's price stays pretty level. So if you decide to sell it again, you'll probably get what you paid for it if you got it second hand.
Gearhead
Pity you're not affiliated with Prince - I would have liked to borrow that 'Cloud' guitar he played in Sign O' The Times for a week or so :-\
prince
@ Gearhead - I will keep a lookout for him at the next family reunion but I don't think he is family. Pity. ?
@ singemonkey - this is definitely different to the bikes. Start up there with a new bike, trailer, kit etc would be R100k. Then the bike needs to be replaced regularly (at a loss of course) and kit only lasts a year or 2 depending how much you ride. Basically, I am taking the savings from not having to buy new kit this year and spending that on my new toy.
Looks like I have found a MIM at a reasonable price from an online shop that has been recommended on GF and who is also a member. Hopefully have it by Christmas.

We are making progress, I now have a guitar.
Those people who hardly know me say I am "quite impatient". Those who know me better say I am "totally impatient". So having a case of GAS all long weekend I loaded up the tour bus and at 3,30 am headed for Joburg to see what I could find up there. I got back about 2 hours ago and am now the proud owner of a black American Standard Strat. And a very happy chappy.
I don't know if the rules allow me to say where I got it but the sales guy was extremely patient, I had 3 different models in mind and he explained the differences and demo'd each one for me, swopping from one to the other and back again many times. That was actually a waste of time because right from the beginning we all knew which one I was going to choose, but it makes me feel better that I took a while to decide and made a rational choice. He then checked all the functions out and set the guitar up the way he thought I would like it.
Now I just need to learn to "drive" it like it should be driven.
