Ok, for some of you this may come as a shock but I also do enjoy single coil tone! ? Seeing as I am however severely lacking in knowledge on the subject I am asking for a little advice from the Stratocaster camp.
I am looking for a set of 3 Single Coil pups to be used in a vintage Strat. I'm looking for the Texas Special type single coil tone from any brand of pickup manufacturer. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what pickups to go for other than the Fender Texas Specials... I'm really looking for that over wound, Texas blues, Stevie Ray type tone. I am looking for some top quality pickups ? if i can afford them ?
Thanks
makepeace
I'm not part of your so-called "strat camp", but some names you should check out are Lollar, Kinman and Fralin. You won't go wrong with any of those boutique makers.

Check out the Tonerider range. I have at my house right now a Strat with Tonriders in and they are very lekker indeed. These are the Pure Vintage set which is not what you're looking for but this is a good quality product, they have a wide range, there is a local distributor providing good service and delivery and, I hear, good pricing.

If you want noiseless, Kinman is the only way. I'm hoping to do some kinda group order soon.

I am trying to be facetious but surely if you want that "Texas Special" type of tone then there can only be one answer to your question ?
The Texas Specials ???
chris77
Mike, more or less what price do you think we will be looking at with a group order on the kinmans?

Just to clarify - do you want Texas Specials or do you want SRV tone? Different animals, despite the marketing. SRV's #1 had stock Fender pickups made in 1959 (ie. forbon flatwork, 42AWG enamelled wire and not overwound). The neck pickup was wound slightly hotter than the other two (5.9K-6K neck, and 5.7K or so bridge and middle). The only non standard thing about them was the coils were wrapped with copper tape to try screen them (which probably shaved off some of the extreme highs). Interestingly Stevie also kept the pickups pretty low to the pickguard.
So if you want SRV tone, get some slightly overwound Fralins or Lollars, fit heavy strings, tune down a half step and play the hell out of the guitar.
If you want the pushed midrange of the Texas Specials, the best place to get it is with Texas Specials.
@Chris77 - if enough guys are interested, I'll speak to Chris Kinman and get some prices. But I'm not going to approach him if it's only a couple of sets.

count me in as one of those interested.
maybe we should start a thread about it?

Thanks for all the feedback and will be doing a lot of research.
Thanks Alan for the info about SRV. I'm a great fan of his music but know very little about the specs of his gear ?

I will definitely be interested in a set of Kinmans as well Alan.

I'll be in for Kinmans at a good price, if you guys go for the quantities. Normal price would render it silly to buy now.

OK. I'll shoot Chris an email today and hopefully have an answer tomorrow.

Hey Alan, count me in for a set as well....... do they specifically have to be Texas Specials? I not, great....... I need to think what I want... ? (I was thinking of getting another set in any case), to make my one Strat a bit different from the other two.
MikeM
Why does no one answer my group buy ?
Put me down for one too
AlanRatcliffe
I've just sent Chris a message. I'll start a thread in the specials board when I get a response.
@ Mike - This is basically your group buy. Sorry if I seem to have muscled in, but I'm on very good terms with Chris, so might be able to get you all a better price - he doesn't usually discount.
MikeM
No no Alan, I appeciate the help, was just commenting that no one wanted when I wanted ?
Gearhead
@Mike:
1. you always want, so that does not say much
2. just to share shipping is less of a discount than we assume we're getting with Alan
3. If some other guys jump in, there's more of a chance of it actually happening, and here there were a couple of guys in already.
Get it? ?
AlanRatcliffe
I did send a message to Chris, but no response yet. Maybe he's on holiday ATM... I'll start the group buy thread as soon as I get a response.
