  • Hi All, thanks for the comments - I'm glad that you guys also like it

Looks like a wide, fat neck - is it? 25" scale too?
Alan, yes, the spalted quilt is a veneer on top of the maple cap. Also it is a 25" scale. As for the neck, it is a single piece mahogany, wide neck. It isn't a fat neck (at least not compared to the PRS Santana that I got), but not a thin neck either (at least not compared to Ibanez wizard necks).

Also, I like the neck join as well.
    • Hi all

So I got a new guitar - I need to stop doing that, especially since I just got another one a couple of months ago. But this one was just so pretty and quite unique ?

Anyway, here are a few pictures:

Its a PRSque style guitar with a Spalted Quilt maple top:

It feels great when I play it:

      Mahogany body and neck:

Beautiful details of the Spalted Quilt top shown in this closeup:

And it came with a really interesting case:

      What do you guys think?
      • Hi all

Thanks for the replies. I was asking the question since I was travelling to London last week and wanted to know how to bring a guitar over if I came across a great deal.

Alas, I didn't have enough time to hunt for any second hand deals, and new guitars in London did not seem to offer any significant savings as compared to SA (at least in the couple of shops that I saw). So alas, my half-hearted quest was not fruitful.

But at least I have an idea of what the administrative burden would be to travel with a guitar on a plane.

        Cheers
        • Hi Everyone

Does anyone have experience with travelling on a plane with a guitar - do they allow you to take it on as carry on luggage or do you have to check it in.
          • Okay, so I realised how to post pictures, so here they are:

            First the Fender (MIA Strat):

Next a couple of my newest beauty (PRS Santana MD):

And I also managed to snap a picture of my acoustic (Tanglewood TW1000c):

I'll get around to taking my Epiphone out of its case eventually, but for now that is my guitars. Please excuse the quality of the pics - they were all taken on my cell-phone.
            • Hi all

I'm kind of new to GFSA - I only joined last month - and I wanted to post some pictures/links to pictures of a couple guitars that I have.

So I'm not sure how to post images so I'm just going to post links to them until I figure it out.

Firstly, here is a link to my Fender Strat. It's a MIA Standard .

Secondly, some of you might have read my posts where I asked about advice on getting a guitar. I do want to thank everyone that gave me advice. I ended up getting a guitar in the end last week. I bought a PRS Santana MD second hand. Links to pictures below:

I also have an Epiphone Les Paul and a Tanglewood TW1000 accoustic guitar as well. Unfortunately, no pictures on hand. I'll get around to taking a few and posting them here eventually.

              Thats it for now.

              Au revior
              • Much appreciated Stoner Riff and ez for the recommendations and insight.
                • Thanks for the replies everyone. It is much appreciated. Yes, I am into tinkering with electronics, hence why I wanted to try doing something like this.

And Attila, thanks for the reading material. I will definitely go through it.

                  • Hi Guys

I've decided that I need a valve amp. But rather than buying one, I am thinking of buying a kit and assembling it. Or maybe do something even more challenging and buy components and try and build something from scratch (getting circuit diagrams and stuff from the internet, of course).

I think technically it should be something that is doable, but I am trying to decide if the effort is worth it. Can someone that has assembled an amp from a kit please comment. Were you happy with the end result?

Also have any of you guys done something like build an amp from scratch before? How much effort was it.

Or should I rather just leave it to the professionals and just buy an amp?

So my implicit assumption is that it will be cheaper to do it this way, but that might be wrong as well.

Anyway, I'm just posting here because I thought I would ask people with more experience than me about this.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

                    Au revoir

                      Hi IceCreamMan

I wanted to know how the pickups on the Tokais (PAF Vintage MKII) compared to Seymour Duncan's or DiMarzio's. Are they any good in general?
                      • IceCreamMan wrote: If you want high end for mid end kinda money then Tokai is your answer....
Thanks IceCreamMan, I will definitely look at the Tokai guitars. Would you recommend any of the models - preferably a super-strat?

So the strat that I have is amazing, but I prefer the humbucker sound. I know that the strat is a high-end guitar, I just want something equally high end with humbuckers. As a stop-gap, I think I'll replace the pickups on my Epiphone.

Also just to answer a previous question, I'm not really trying to get a guitar for investment purposes. I just want a great guitar that I can be happy with looks wise and with great tone and playability.
                        • Hi Alan,
Alan Ratcliffe wrote: Still, Schecter aren't the only game in town. Ibanez, Fender, ESP, Jackson, PRS (to name just a few) - all have local distribution and wide ranges of models to suit all tastes and pockets.
Thanks for the suggestions, and I really do like the Ibanez's and ESPs. Especially the S-series in the Ibanez and the Horizon NT series on the ESPs. I love the PRS custom 22 and 24, but I don't think I can afford them any time soon.

Alan Ratcliffe wrote: Any idea of the type of guitar you're looking for? Who are your influences, etc.? You have a Strat and a Les Paul already - do you lean more to one than the other?
The kind of guitar that I want to buy is a super-strat - in that I love the shape of the strats, but I do want humbucking pickups. So I haven't really played my epiphone since I got my strat, so I definitely lean towards the strat.

In terms of influences, it is really broad: I like Metallica, Santana, RHCP, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin etc. I even listen to classical music.
                          • Thanks all for the advice.

My take away from all of the responses is that I need to not be in a hurry. And I should take my time browsing, playing and looking out for something in the second hand market.

I think I had/have GAS though - I need to try and get over it.

As a side note, does anyone know where to get Schecter guitars?

                            • doc-phil wrote: Welcome. I started off with a Epi Les Paul Special, and my musical tastes when I started (and to a large degree now) was the heavier stuff.

If you're looking at getting something on the higher-end of the scale with some mean metal muscle, have a look at Schecter guitars.
                              Hi doc-phil

I've asked around for Schecter guitars, but all the music stores tell me that they cannot get any. Could you maybe recommend somewhere that I can contact to get me a Schecter guitar?

                              Thanks
                              • Hi All

I'm new to guitar forum and I wanted to pick the brains and experience of all the people here. I would like to buy the best guitar that I can for around R20k.

I shopped around a bit and saw a second hand PRS Custom 22 (2005 model) for about R22k. Is that a good deal?

Also, does anyone have an opinion about the Ernie Ball Musicman JP12? I can possibly get one new for just over R25k. Are these guitars worth it?

Do you all maybe have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

                                Ciao

                                • Thanks guys for the greetings and advice. I'll be sure to take it to heart
                                  • Hello All

So I was told that joining Guitar Forum was a good way to interact with the community and ask for advice and stuff when it comes to guitars and the like. So I did.

Not much to say about my experience with guitars, it is very limited, but I want to learn. I enjoy listening to Rock and Metal and would love to one day be able to play well enough to play some songs from a few of my favourite bands.

In terms of guitars that I own, I have an Epiphone Les Paul, a Fender Strat and a Tanglewood acoustic. I am looking for a high end guitar to buy in the immediate future, so any suggestions or recommendations are welcome.

Anyway, that is it from me.

                                    Ciao
