  • Glad you're happy with your guitars.

Maybe Sandton JD is different than Woodmead? But I am very unhappy with them...

My wife bought me a Martin DRs-1 acoustic through Marshall online a couple of years back. They charged full retail price and then you get free delivery and 'setup' by JD Custom.

When I tuned it the first time it was obvious nobody checked the nut - the g string would jump from flat to sharp the whole time.

We contacted them and let them know I was driving through from Witbank to bring the guitar (R300 petrol on my expense).

When I got there, nobody even hinted at "hey sorry" or "our mistake" or anything. I was taken up to the JD section and greeted by a cocky young guy with a stinking attitude. JD himself was cool and he filed the nut and fixed the guitar up quickly. Meanwhile the young foreign accent dude was making my blood boil dissing one of our top (if not THEE top) builders.

They handed me my guitar and that was that!

Not even a pack of strings or anything to compensate! Not even a "sorry".
    • I would like to know who manufactures what locally in South Africa.

There is an existing thread AMP TECHS http://www.guitarforum.co.za/amps-speakers-and-valves/amp-techs/

But I'm curious about locally manufactured amplifier parts.
From caps, resistors, transformers, speakers and even valves (if there are any)!

And as a side topic, why do the local techs/builders import so many components? Are the local stuff too sub-standard?

      • Yes I've had a chat with both of them. They come highly recommended!

The topic I would like to start is: "Local manufacturers". Most components are imported by the guys and I want to know who manufactures what locally...

From transformers to resistors to speakers and hopefully, one day, valves!

Reckon I should give it a go...

        • Thanks!

Yes I do mic it up. Works OK for the most part, but I'm busy planning a custom amp

I actually started a discussion on SA Music Store (fb) about it... I'm looking for local builders

Are there any existing topics/threads covering:

Who are the respected amp builders in SA?
          What parts are manufactured locally?
What parts HAVE to be imported?

You know... Who's out there doing this stuff?

I would LOVE to support local builders and manufacturers as far as possible
