With guitar speakers emphasis is on "recone" and with genuine recone kit. Anything else will end up with a working speaker at best but it will probably sound more like a PA midrange than a guitar speaker. The other option is a new speaker from Celestion for most British and EU or USA rock/metal amps or a Jensen for the classic Fender clean sound.
Just as a completely different suggestion maybe look at the A Type. Kind of a cross between the Celestion Tone and the American tone of the old Fenders.
Here is Celestion's description below
"Inspired by our favourite modern American tones the A-Type is a different kind of guitar speaker from Celestion. Of course it still has the musical and revealing three- dimensional quality that is the heart and soul of a Celestion guitar speaker however it features a more laid-back midrange which reveals body and complexity in the upper register accompanied by full and rounded low frequencies. The A-Type conveys a fluid even performance with an increased headroom threshold that allows your amp’s tone to shine through. Clean players will love the smooth articulation; for rockers the brooding powerful low end threatens thunder that’s only a heavy riff away!"
The Greenback is generally described as having a "restrained" and "smoother" top end. Perhaps it is the upper mids that you are not happy with? They can be very forward and perhaps a bit honky under certain conditions. In a 4x12 cab the bass is known to be warm but a bit loose and uncontrolled. It is very much a rock speaker.
What music are you playing and with which guitar(s)? I see you mention the clean channel on the Koch and clean is not really where the Greenback shines. A single Greenback does not have the power handling for that amp, is this where the 4x12 comes in? As a single speaker option have a look at the Creamback family and for the 4x12 maybe replace 2 Greenbacks with the G12H Anniversary to tighten up the bass end.
Yup, Profaudio indeed.
Are you looking at the G12H Anniversary? If so compared to G12M it has a bit less bottom end warmth and more aggressive mids. Most popular for lead however many like to mix an M and an H in a 2x or even 4x 12 cab. This speaker is not as popular as it used to be, the G12 H Creamback has taken over due to the higher power handling allowing a single cab to do almost the same job as 2 x H Anniversary.
All good, of course you are right, I meant EVH and Heritage Greenback G12M.
As an aside the re-issue Greenback is now UK made again, no difference in the product but some people prefer the idea of UK production.
The intention of my reply is to discourage people who maybe don't have the funds to damage 20K worth of speakers to think twice before attempting something like this.
The G12EVH is identical to the Greenback, just minus the back can. This was not the point of the post.
OD1 Lol I did however sand the cones and made the surface smoother, and that was the day I got them.
As the Celestion distributor for SA I have to say that this practice is definitely not recommended and will void the warranty. The same applies to other practices such as treating the cone or surrounds with solvents, physically damaging or "ageing" the suspension or for that matter hitting things with a hammer.
If you really have to have the "original vintage" tone the rather buy a genuine vintage cab or try to source the now discontinued Heritage Greenback speakers.
An important note is that USPS while cheap is actually just a postal; service, once it arrives in SA it is handled by our postal service. Good luck on receiving your item within 6 months, in one piece or indeed at all. The same applies to any postal based service. UPS and DHL are door to door couriers, no post office but expensive.
Musical instruments and instruments in a case carry no duty. A case or bag alone is treated as luggage and carries over 35% duty plus high shipping costs which is why cases and bags are so expensive here.
Amplifiers and speakers also carry duties plus for the importer in SA amplifiers require a letter of authority based around an expensive and unnecessary safety test procedure which cost also has to be recovered from the customer.Greenback vs Creamback is a lot to do with the amp and guitar characteristics. Creamback is warmer with a smoother top end, Greenback very detailed tops but can get shrill when pushed.
The speaker is the Celestion Ten 30 with a Vox sticker on. This is Celestion's entry level 10 inch and although great value there is definitely room for improvement.
https://celestion.com/product/ten-30/The next step up is the VT Junior which will tighten up the bass end, sound "sweeter" clean and have more balls overdriven.
https://celestion.com/product/vt-junior/First prize if it fits would be the G10 Creamback which is just better all round.
https://celestion.com/product/g10-creamback/Maybe let us know what kind of budget you have in mind. That way someone might have something that fits your requirement.
Hi Alex
We are the SA distributor for Celestion so can supply any of the current models. We do not trade in speakers so Gumtree, Facebook, this Forum etc. is your best option to sell it second hand. What style of music do you play? What kind of tone/sound are you looking for?
You can view the full range on our website profaudio-online or contact me (John) at info@profaudio.co.za to discuss further.
Any particular speaker in mind?
Sounds interesting, what speakers will you be looking at? Celestion Alnico Ruby would be a great option if budget allows, possibly Vintage 30 or M65 Creamback as a less costly choice.
As Marcoluz says - change the speakers. Most big brand entry level combos are fitted with the cheapest Chinese designed speaker the company could lay their hands on and they really are junk. The speaker is one of the costliest components in the box and one most people do not think about. A better speaker will make a bigger change than all the other mods discussed in this thread put together. 2 x Celestion VT10 or G10 Vintage and that Laney will be in a different league.
On a related note the Celestion Seveny 80 used in so many China sourced cabs and combos is hard and glassy with no real bottom end or overdrive warmth. It is intended to be an one size fits all speaker which in the end means it doesn't really do anything well. If you have one of these and are looking to buy a new amp rather just change to a Celestion V or A Type for a massive jump in tonal quality.

hi
I would suggest you get hold of JP Le Roux at lerouxampworks with a view to buying one of his great little amp designs. He will happily supply to suit the speaker of your choice and probably have some good advise re valve amps generally.
The Code 100 uses "custom" speakers (code for cheap) 4 Ohm speakers. I would suggest a separate single cab with one of these https://celestion.com/product/200/F12_X200/ which are full range units specifically designed for modelling amps. They are also reasonably priced at R3,825 and will work in a normal single 12 cab or, better, in a ported cab for which I have the Celestion factory spec.
A separate cab will also mean that you can leave the Code 100 stock which will help resale value when you want to sell on. Do not change the stock speakers as all non modelling guitar speakers have their own distinct tone which will mess up the modelling characteristics.
"Yes, that could do ..
But ... I just bought an Amp ... is too f** loud for my place ... wtf was I thinking ...
I was thinking in making a 2x6.5 or 1x10 double the Ohm's
But I'm not sure yet "What speaker is in the amp? Which amp is it?
Double the impedance (Ohms) will only make a 3dB difference to SPL at any given setting. 3dB is just enough to hear that it is softer. -10dB is half the volume
If it currently has a 12" speaker we could look at a 16 Ohm unit with lower efficiency which will make some difference but nothing massive. Maybe you are just having to drive everything very hard to get decent tone so we can look at that option as well.
Thanks V8
Yes we (Profaudio) are still the Celestion distributors and Musicmadness is our online portal.
D10221 you (or anyone else for that matter) can email me at info@profaudio.co.za for advice/suggestions on what you require. Where in SA are you based? JP of leRoux ampworks makes great cabs if you are in the Gauteng area.
Celestion have announced 3 new guitar speakers at Namm.
