Another forum that I participate in is gearing up for it's annual polls. They look for 3 nominations for album of the year and gigs of the year.
Albums have to be RELEASED in the calendar year. So archival releases, the sort of thing that Dylan and Young release, are eligible but straight re-issues are not. There's a grey area as regards re-issues because these often have new material. I'd say that a re-issue with a couple of bonus tracks shouldn't count, but something like the re-issue of Richard & Linda Thompson's "Shoot Out The Lights", with an entire 2nd disc of live material probably should. For the gigs it must have taken place in the calendar year and you must have been there (not watching on TV - though it may be possible in some cases to have been there AND to have watched on TV).
Purely for informational/sharing purposes. Perhaps an extension of "what are you listening to now". No prizes, no need to award points or order your nominations.
Maximum of 3 albums, maximum of 3 gigs.
Nominate away!

Gigs:
Tony Cox at Old Parktonians Club (I've seen him 3 times this year, so need to specificy WHICH gig applies)
"An Evening Of Political Song" - Tom Robinson, Norma Waterson, Neil MacColl, Martin Carthy etc etc
Martin Simpson
Albums:
Robert Plant - Band Of Joy
Loudon Wainwright III - Ten Songs For The New Depression
Richard Thompson - Dream Attic
Several people have observed to me recently that the music died in some year or other. I have to disagree. I think there's a lot of fabulous music around, it's just not on MTV or playing on the major radio stations or on the big labels or given luxurious advertising in shopping malls.

Klaxons- Surfing the Void

Have only bought Robert Plant's 'Band of Joy' which is a 2010 release, I have to nominate.
One of the best albums I have heard in a while.
Only saw one gig, Crowded House, which was surprisingly quite good

Great thread...
Albums:
1: The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
2: Manic Street Preachers - Postcards From A Young Man
3: We Are Scientists - Barbara
Gigs:
1: Feeder at the Bassline
2: Ash on Live@5 in studio session
3: Nothing... didnt see anyone else, although the ShadowClub supporting Feeder do deserve a mention.
Album wise, there were quite a few to choose from... I checked my iTunes play counts, as that is a good indication of what I have listened to the most - the 2010 releases from Feeder and Ash were both right up there too, along with this years releases from the Hold Steady, the National, Arcade Fire, Weezer, Interpol and Dinosaur Pile-Up.

TCV were at Reading and a whole bunch of festivals, around Eaurope and USA..... Opening for Arctic Monkeys mainly, and also Eagles of Death Metal....

You saw Steve Newman playing! I'd say that was a gig. I nominated Martin Simpson and the venue for that was comparable to TJs (better beer, but other than that not much in it). I also nominated a Tony Cox performance in a side room at Old Parktonian's club.

Huge Point Bob ?
Steve Newman was world class, I should also give Them Particles an honourable mention, I saw them three times.
Must also mention the GFSA members I saw this year :
Keira, X Rated Bob, Fingerpicker, Conrad and moist recently Webejam - all would be on my list
Mr-M
Albums:
1) Switchfoot - Hello Hurricane
2) The Black Keys - Brothers
3) The Dead Weather - Sea of Cowards
Live:
Didn't go to many shows this year and in general most were not too great - all SA bands. I enjoyed a few of the bands/ artists at Joburg Burning 3 though, so I'll include those.
1) Josie Field - Roxy's - terrible acoustics and sound in the venue as usual, but she was really a standout performer and overcame the sound issues
2) Press OK - The Bohemian - great jam band, great performance
3) Fire through the window - Jozi G-Spot - I don't usually like indie pop/ rock but this was actually a nice, upbeat band with some good songs. It was close between them and MIKA's band, but I think these guys and gal just edged it for me.

Squonkster.... that's at least FIVE gigs now ?
Does Missus Squonk know about this? If not and if you prefer that she doesn't then we can discuss terms.

I dunno. ??? Your wife might object to that... And I think you'd make an awkward looking lady. ?
On another note (probably a slightly flat, Big Muff and Whammy infused B), I'm changing my number 3 album to The White Stripes - Under Great White Northern Lights. Forgot about that one and it was great!
Jack-Flash-Jr
Albums:
1. Endless Boogie "Full House Head"
2. The Black Crowes "Croweology"
3. The Dead Weather "Sea of Cowards"

2. Hellfire Blues Club @ Birkenhead (shameless self-promo but I enjoyed the hell out of it!)
