It depends on what you need. Sometimes the simplicity of a guitar, amp and a couple of stomps is enough. Sometimes you need the power of digital.
As most folk around here go, I'm digital most of the time these days - mainly as it would take a pedalboard the size of a truck to do the things I mostly like doing. But I've been missing the ability to just plug in a cable to an amp and play (hence the Vox on it's way).

I've chucked my digital stuff, I just didn't get quite the "feel" from it that I wanted.. Overdrives felt a bit thin and I felt i lacked and overall "warmth"..
Gone all single pedals now, I LOVE my overdrive, I got a Fulldrive II through my ac30.. Haven't heard digital get what i want.. But it all depends what u as the guitarist r after i guess..

I would never be able to afford 1/10th of the analogue equipment that I simulate digitally. How many people that are not rock superstars can afford or have the space to to keep a Vox AC30, 59 Marshall, Marshall 800, Fender Twin Reverb, Fender Tweed, Roland JC 50, Mesa Boogie, Bassman Pro, Hi whatt together with matching cabs, Fuzz face pedal, Big Muff distortion, Leslie Rotator, Chorus, Flanger, Pnaser, Pitch Bender, Ringer Modulator, EQ filters, Dunlop Cry Baby, Vox 846 wha, Tube Screamer, Talk Box, Tube compressor, noise gates ... etc etc

Ever had roadies, or groupies they rock!!!!
Digital is simple and plug and play, but lets face it digital will always sound digital.
The reason why i say that is when a guitarist rocks up a gig with his gt-8 and plug it in, he gets cancelled out by the rest of the band, in the situation of a typical small SA gig. The sound just doesn't cut through.
I will work for a big stadium. But not for small gigs.
Wessel
The thing I have noticed about digital pedals is that the sound well.....digital and robotic(especially Zoom pedals). Even when Robert Marcello demonstrated the Boss GT8 last year it sounded good but still a bit robotic. It's maybe just the way it was set up or the way the effect was programmed ?

Rule 1 - Make sure that you get a stereo channel on the bands PA
Rule 2 - Make sure that there is no one between you and the PA faders so that you can crank yourself up if necessary.
Rule 3 - If Rule 1 and/or 2 cannot be achieved storm down to your car and pull out 2x250w powered speakers to play through. 8)

IMO Zoom pedals are toys that should be best put in Christmas crackers

I have often had a problem with Roland's quaint idea of what overdrive/distortion means. It's often is tinny and lacks balls - the other problem with the GT series is that their digital sample rates are IMO too low to render a good analogue sound - I am probably going to be flamed to death for these comments but what the hell - that's what I think.

For WESSEL:
I set up the stage rig 4 Robert Marcello in Cape Town last year - sadly he decided to send the GT-8 straight into the PA at the last second, instead of putting it into the JC-120's other channel to make a more fair tonal comparison with the ME-20 which WAS going through the amp.
He also likes that very 80's distortion with chorus & reverb - the chorus tends to cancel out frequencies and thins out the sound - hence the fizziness - there is also something called a RESONATOR which simulates cab tonal complexities on the GT-8 - no-one uses it and it is a secret weapon !
I found that little ME-20 sounded better into the JC miked up than the GT-8 did straight to the desk -
Robert wasn't particularly concerned with "perfect levels" or "perfect tone" - he said he just plugs in & gos - where the next BEER was coming from however, was of far more importance ! Hell of a nice guy !
For GEE
:
Sadly, most GT-8 users don't spend enough time sculpting those awesome tones that ARE possible - mine cuts through a mix just fine - trick is to tweak the GLOBAL EQ settings for each venue's room sound though.
Multi-FX definitely help tone-specific cover musos more, but I know some real PRO cover guys who have been around the block 4 decades and use a simple guitar, amp and 1 or 2 pedals - killer tone still comes from those fingers !
On the flip side of this argument I have a whole cupboard JUST for pedals - vintage EHX Electric Mistress and S Stone, MXR Phase 100, reissue USA EHX Small Clone & Big Muff, BOSS DS-1, vintage BOSS OD-1, VOX Clyde McCoy wah, ISP Decimator Gate etc ... pedal porn is the shit ! 8)

Damn I missed that trick (bows to he of superior understanding)

Rene
I'm sure you'll run rings around my theory or playing - I'm great at fixing other people's tonal/playing problems, but somehow never my own !
BTW: Tell student Mary that Gareth says "hi" and she must behave herself !
Renesongs
All my students are well behaved I think It's the cat-o-nine tails that I use as a guitar strap - haven't come across Mary though unless she is using a nom de plum or not started lesson yet - but will send your regards when she arrives.

Now to get Robert Marchello.
When robert was playing through the gt-8, and then switch to New range of boss pedals, that was a huge difference. When he switched on the Boss Dyna Drive, all of a sudden i believe every note he played had some meaning. That was a turning point in my live. but then he switched back to the Gt-8 and then i lost that connection.

4 Rene:
My mistake - there must b another teacher by your name more towards town end ... hmmm
4 Manfred:
The Dynadrive (along with some of the new "Fender" amp pedals) was running with the ME-20 into the front of the amp, while the GT-8 went straight to the desk.
I can't recall if he even went to desk with L & R outputs ! (As Rene mentioned - gives a MUCH fuller sound - I run mine into a Roland KC-350 into a pair of L/R inputs - sounds KILLER !)
The other factor is that club has had the same PA 4 about 15 years, and its always been shitty - they recently replaced it, apparently the boys from Taxi Violence said it's sounding a lot better !
If that GT-8 had been running into the return of the JC-120 the tonal comparison would have been a VERY different story !
Amazing, even when we have an international quality player here, the conditions of comparison STILL weren't perfect !
Maybe Alan & I should do a software AND multieffect into full-range system comparison clinic ... hmmm

I'm not nearly as experienced as most folk round here but perhaps that's a good thing. I love my DS-1 and Morley Wah but, with just the right tweaks, I get really great sound out of my laptop. The overdrive sounds overdrive-y (and unpredictable), the distortion sounds crisp (and predictable) and there is just a WORLD of things to tweak to get your own unique-ish sound. I'm loving it!

Now that would be cool ?

lol or the way that he plays guitar? As much as I like to joke around, I mean that.
The pedal that sounded the most absolute WORSE to me at that demo was the "Metalcore" (what a way to stamp cool trend name on to your pedal to sell ?) He really tried to 'sell' it to people with the bonus' like extra sustain and high gain, but I wasn't buying, I think I cringed the entire time he put that thing on. ?
The only thing that put people in awe was his playing (which was pretty nice and clean) which some people obviously mistook that for the tone of the pedal.
You can't put good shoes on an average dancer and expect them to make you dance well, but you can put shitty shoes on a good dancer and they'll still make them work

Seems like almost every one on this forum has been to the Robert Marchello gig!!!!
I would really like to meet you all at the next guitar workshop.
When is the next big guitar workshop? Maby malmsteen? as if......

And the teased hair ?
