/have you ever been forced to play your guitar with a missing string? I have on a few occasions. My 6th string and my 1st string. It was so painful having my 6th sting missing. this was 4months into my guitar playing. I had to improvise for 2 months :'( then I change my strings for the first time and my 1st string snapped☹ but it was fine at that time I did not need it. Now my 1st string snapped last week while pulling a slayer solo. Now it is painful as I love playing solos. Been improvising though. But I have noticed when it is not there you really begin to miss it. Due to funds I will not be able to get new strings till February :'( such is life ??? ?

Also, if someone offers you free strings, you take them. There is no shame in that. You can repay the favour by getting strings for another n00b when you are vituosos with more strings than you need (even for the 8 string guitars you are rocking).

If GFSA had a like button, I would have pressed it.

3 months at the very least. If you can go longer than that, you ain't doin' it right.

Those are the only strings I use on my acoustics now.. Rather expensive, but the special coating on them is great!

I use to change my strings every 2 months but alas this year has been a little tight, :'(

I'm suddenly feeling the urge to go out and buy a couple of packs of fresh strings. Seems like the rust on my current ones really doesn't add character to them ?

I am pretty shocked myself...

I would go as far as saying change them at minimum every 2 months...

I change mine monthly depending on usage, If I spend the month playing my Larrivee 80% of the time, they going to be changed in 4 weeks...

Maybe Allan would consent to write a sticky post on general guitar discussion with links to various articles of interest to n00bs - either GFSA articles or outside pieces. Like, how to buy your first guitar, guitar maintenance, how to practise, etc. etc.

Seventhson, I do appreciate that strings can be expensive when you're starting out. I was just making sure that you guys knew that it's not a virtue to preserve strings as long as possible, but rather a necessary concession to your financial situation. Strings may be a bit too bright for some people (I'm one) when they're brand new, but after a long while they begin to lose all life and seriously ruin your tone and become difficult to keep in tune.

I just ordered 12 sets of GHS strings from Stewmac. Not the best strings, I'm sure, but very cheap for 12 or more sets when you're ordering along with other stuff and they are sealed so they should last. I'm thinking that maybe we should start doing something where forum members order cheap strings along with other orders and then offer them at cost to forum members so that the n00bs can afford strings more often? Something like that?

Prolong string life by washing your hands before playing, and wiping down the strings with a cloth after playing. Some people just have more corrosive sweat and this can help.

The strings I usually buy (Rotosound Yellow) are actually better priced locally. Got 3 sets for R120 today - not a bad price if you ask me.

Hey I can empathize. Long, long ago before I started fixing my floating trems I'd change strings like, once a year 'cos it was such a PITA. It would always surprise me how much "difference" new strings make, both in tone and feel. Ah the bad old days.

I love new strings. But when I always need new ones there is never money for them.
When I get a job I will change them once a month atleast.
