Anyone know where one could find a good supplier of Ukuleles in South Africa? Specifically Cape Town/Western Cape.

Ey, Ive seen some el cheapo ukes being sold in CashConverters stores, dont know about in the cape though, maybe you could mail them. Theres also a SA luthiers forum, or something like that, that could maybe put you in contact with someone.

Thanks for your reply. I've also seen some in cash converters, but I'd really like to get a quality one. I found one here http://www.terryd.co.za/ssu120.html and its rated quite highly on Ukulelehunt.com. I would prefer a little choice though :/

Have you tried overseas stores, Ive seen some on dolphinmusic.co.uk (there was a fender uke that surprised me at 300£), but I dont know how their prices and service compare though

Yeah I've been looking at online shops. I would like to get one quite soon though, as I'd like to take it on holiday to France with me. I'm thinking maybe I'll buy one there? Just thought I'd ask if there were any local shops that have a good range.

The ones available locally are all the same cheap and nasty model with different names. Look in the UK or Hawaii for decent ones as Skiffle and Hawaiian music both use ukes.

Just remembered, you can get the Fender ones locally - I saw two in Marshall Cape a few months back - one even had a pickup system. Expensive, but properly made.

Hmm.. I'm REALLY keen on one.. So if someone can't bring me one back from the USA in Jan, i may look to get one in Jan or Feb or something.. Will see what GC is like ?

On the building note, that could be fun.. But not having ever really played on one or have one to compare it to, that'd be a hard task to build, at least for me anyway ?

Even if you buy one now, with your skills you should really consider buying a kit at some stage and building one. Great quality for low cost. I don't have the chops for it otherwise I'd do that myself. You get quality solid woods and whatnot - for the price of a budget instrument.

Yeah I'd definitely like to do that at some stage. Would be nice to have an instrument to compare it with as well. The StewMac kit looks great. The only complaints seem to be with the tuners and the strings.

old thread but just in-case anyone was wondering, fender makes a tenor uke that you can get localy, I had to import mine from the states... kinda funny considering it was made in china, shipped to florida usa then all the way accross to pond to Joburg....

Just to add to this topic. Toms (here in durban anyways) is now stocking a few mandolins and ukulele's. They never did before, so possibly your toms is now too.

Marshals in Cape Town. I have often seen ukuleles there as well as Bothners in Plumstead. They had some Martin ukuleles that go for a good sum. There are also some Arias at a very reasonable price.
I have a few ukuleles including one that I made myself. Give me a call when you are in Cape Town if you want to come and take a look.
