Not great, though pretty good for the money.

You may recall that earlier this year Keira and I, with help from a GFSAer and McGibbon's, were able to provide strings, encouragement and tuition for a guy who was in hospital on a long-term basis.

McGibbon's are launching a program by which they are going to make guitars available for people who have an urge to play but, for whatever reason, don't have enough of the folding stuff. Earlier this year McGibbon's gave me a bag and strings at cost, and put a new nut on a guitar for free. So time to put something into Andy's project (and I'm not the only person to do so).

If you have any old guitars looking for a home (don't have to be pristine, need to be playable) or want to contribute to something that will bring joy and focus into somebody else's life, then McGibbon's can help you help somebody else. I bought a beginner's guitar that is on special at the moment. 1/2 and 3/4 size instruments would be less than R500 - and that would include a bag. If nothing else this is an acknowledgement and a continuation of the generosity that others showed earlier this year.

They are having a public launch next weekend and plan to donate 30 guitars!

Hey Bob, I saw this on his website, but did'nt think much about it. Now that you have posted here, I just remembered I have a guitar (in a bag) that I will take to Andy sometime early next week. We sometimes forget how blessed we are, and it will be a pleasure making someone (kid?) happy somewhere.

Wow Bob, that's fantastic! Super inspiring!

Our little music school is also going strong in Khayalitsha. We had our Christmas Concert this Saturday. It's really amazing how far the kids have come in a year with basically only being able to play for an hour each Saturday. We only have 8 guitars which we try keep at the school to keep them safe, so they don't get to take one home very often.

OK... so now I DO know who it was happy NGD for.

I was at the hand over ceremony this afternoon. I was asked to physically hand over two guitars - mine and a second paid for by another GFSA member who wishes to rename anonymous. These instruments were part of a gift of 6 new guitars given to a project running under the name of Akani. Akani operate in Diepsloot (a very poor area north of Jo'burg). Akani provide creche facilities for single mothers so that they can seek work knowing that their kids are cared for, and also provide schooling for pre-teens. School has just broken up, but they had 104 children enrolled in school this year and have 650 in the creche. They are teaching music as a subject and as an after-school activity next year, so the instruments will be used in that part of the project.

At the risk of flogging a good horse until it's dead, Andy's project ("Give a guitar - ignite a life') is ongoing and he hopes that this afternoon's ceremony is just a start. So if you know of any unwanted acoustic guitars, then maybe you would like to steer them Andy's way for channelling into a charitable project.

I have some pictures of the hand over and also all the donated guitars (polished, restrung and so on if they were second hand) on display prior to the handover. These will come on line sometime this weekend.

Thanks, but I didn't kick anything off. Andy has been trying hard for over a year to get this going. Now at last the wheel is starting to roll. It's quite interesting to see all these different threads coming together.

A bit OT, but there is a new takeaway shop opened right opposite Andy's, and they sell pretty good bunny chows. I had me a bean bunny for lunch.

If you had not brought this to the attention of the GFSA, it may not have been so successful...... I dropped off a guitar with Andy on Wednesday, and he was all enthused and looking forward to Saturday, unfortunately, I could'nt be there, but I really felt good when I left.

Now this is the type of initiative I would support anytime!!!! Well done Andy, Eve and Bob (and I believe Keira had a part to play as well) ........ :applause:
