Here's a few pics from tackling the saddle on Friday.
I found a saddle that is a little better suited to the pick up on the FX. It has the lower protrusions to help with the pickup, as mentioned by Alan. It is still a little thicker than what the pickup plate can accept and a little narrower, but benefits from a compensation ridge.
Here's the standard setup on the FX310
...and eased apart
Because the saddle is thicker, I had to sand it down. A Dremel tool would have worked nicely but I unfortunately don't have one of those at my disposal.
I sanded it down at a slight angle so that I could wedge it into the pup, but not lose the thickness on the top section - which could easily affect the intonation I surmised.
Once it was down to a reasonable thickness, I pushed it in and applied a small amount of pressure to get it seated.
Placed back in and lightly tapped down.
I completed the restringing and was a little concerned about the action.
It is a little higher than previously but this I will address shortly.
Strung up and plugged in I'm disappointed. 'A' through to 'e' sounds fine but my lower 'E' (top string) has a very hollow 'I'm-coming-to-you-straight-from-the-bathroom-cubicle' sound to it... not pleasing at all. All that I can gather is that it's not making good contact so when I lower the action, I'll sort this out.
BLEH!!!
