A really cool deconstruction of Gimme Shelter that reveals a bit of the flawed magic that is the Stones...

really really interesting stuff. love the stones, and gimme shelter's excellent. they should do this on "you can't always get what you want". listen to that song through the left speaker only, its absolutely chilling.

Finally got to go through these. Coupla thoughts:

Firstly, you've got to love how messy it all is. There's serious bleed on every track. I think it speaks to why well-recorded tracks from the '60s sound a lot more alive and organic than modern tracks.

Secondly, only Charlie is really good. That's another thing. The Stones aren't made by technical perfection by any means. Mick's voice hits tons of flats. Next to that other singer's voice, his sounds really amateur. And yet, the life is in it. The Stones would have got nowhere fast if it wasn't for Charlie Watts. He provides that intense groove that makes all Mick and Keef's tunes come alive.

It's amazing to hear how similar this track sounds - picked apart - to a lot of our home recordings. The difference is how well it was put together, firstly, and more importantly, how such a solid drummer elevates everything into magic land.

For me the female vocal on Gimme Shelter must be about the most sexy sounding thing in the whole wide world plse dont ban me! Merry Clayton it is they say.

Interesting rendition at the Rock Hall Of Fame show that I saw on 101 last night with Mick Jagger, U2 and Black eyed Peas. I've never cared much for U2 at all and not much for Black Eyed Peas except I like the chic's voice. I think she did a pretty good job of the Merry Clayton bit. Fergie is the name hey? Jus what I think.

Yeah. That really is the hottest vocal. I'd love to find someone in SA I could work with who could do that. Thing is, most of the people I've met who can sing like that aren't into rock 'n roll music.
