No, there's a strange breed that think that the playing of the guitar is the more important aspect of the process! These poor characters often choose one sound and use no effects, patches or gadgets and in extreme cases may not even use the natural overdrive ability of the amplifier.

These odd birds can often be recognised by the lack of anything other than a cable between their guitar and amp, continual usage of the lesser known "volume control" artefact and also usually by the distressing lack of "alternate tuned" or "backup" guitars on stage.

There is a rare variant on the species, which has the additional characteristics of: playing rhythm while someone else solos; occasionally turning down the volume on their amplifier; and knowing chords containing arcane symbology such as #, b, +, sus and aug (not to be confused with the more commonly found arcane symbology of the Metalhead or Goth subspecies).

On a lighter note (s'cuse the pun), would the e-bow be considered an effect or a playing technique? I've always thought of it as both.
