Alan, what's the easiest way to lift the ground? I have an hp and the power cable is a bit complicated. Don't think ungrounded ones are available either. Should I just modify an adapter by taking out it's ground connection?
Usually there is a mains lead that goes into the power supply. Clip the earth lead in the plug (if it's a moulded plug, you may have to cut the plug off and wire on a new one, leaving the earth disconnected).
Remember, when you have it connected to other devices that are themselves earthed (mixer, powered speakers, etc.), the computer is earthed by them. However, I can't stress enough that if you use the computer without connecting it to other earthed devices it will not be earthed, which can be a hazard if anything goes wrong. So get a spare mains leads from a computer shop or electrical supplier, so you have one for those times.
There are other ways to solve the problem too - you can use a two channel DI box between your audio output and the mixer and use the ground lift switch. This is the safest but most expensive option.
