hi ya all,
just bought 2nd hand of course an old 70's possibly late 60's Aria ES175 copy great guitar and beautiful condition and really beautiful in sunburst with the binding all around ....... but i seem to have probs with tuning stability as in i tune to pitch and play and then the neck seems to flex slightly if i push too hard on the neck as in bend ...so the tuning can sound perfect a times and some chords just sound outa tune
so i guess the thin neck is flexing so to remedy that do i put on thicker strings and increase the tension or do i go for lighter strings to reduce the tension ..... presently my nearest music store had no jazz flatwounds so i opted for power slinky's till i get the jazz strings .... so .11 to .48 is whats on at moment.....
any other remedy's for this problem.......... the guitar will be going for a proper setup soon as i get time off from the gigs ..... but want to use it in meantime ? it looks way too cool not to have on the stage

Can't wait to see pics. There's just a discussion going on about Aria Gibson copies on mylespaul (under "other Les Pauls" if you care to check it out). Some sound like good value.
I'm going to be more curious than helpful, I'm afraid :-[
I'm amazed the neck can bend that much. It does have a truss rod right?

Broken truss? Top not stable? Bridge flexing? Lighter strings will probably make the problem less, but 175s want thick cables for the proper jazz tone, don't they?
Rather find the problem by carefully trying to flex parts and see what moves. Let the tech quote you and then decide whether to sell it to me or not ?

yeah guys thanks for the response doubt the trussrod is broken ... just think the gibson style neck is very thin and slightly pliable...... maybe i'm exagerating the problem but i'm used to a thick classical neck where nothing moves maybe i'm being a tad heavy handed too.....
@singemonkey . wow does this baby have tone and it's a 100% gibson ES175 copy with all the binding around body and the headstock also the neck is bound and beautifully aged......... and get this it has the original wooden saddle........ like a tunomatic kinda thing but in wood ......and big OMG this guitars body is as big as my ibanez acoustic bass AEB10 if not bigger ...... but the tone is to die for.... in fact i paid almost twice what i usually would have for this ...... i tend to lean towards great deals this guy sold it but did not budge on price by too much but instead of walking away i couldn't it looked and sounded awesome...... and yeah it's so close in look to original that i'm sure it was one Gibson woulda sued over or tried to...... i'll post pics soon

The early Matsumoku-made Arias are great - I'm a big fan.
I doubt string gauge will make a difference though - the string tension is countered by the truss rod adjustment and everything else is down to the neck itself. Mahogany always has a bit more flex than other woods like maple (especially with the double cutaway designs- it's something you just have to get used to IMO.
