Hanging your guitars

I have been having a bit of a dilemma hanging all my guitars - firstly, due to a lack of space, and secondly due to the price that hangars go for. I have got quotes from R150 up to R300 each, and I wanted 8 or 9. For that price I could have got myself another guitar...

I had five already, but unmatched - three of one, two of another - so decided to just buy another 3 and not replace all of them. These would have been my first prize (Woodies hangars which are basically invisible https://www.wiamusic.com/hanger/gallery/), but they are too expensive on eBay and the SA distributor doesnt return calls or emails

While visiting a hardware store on the weekend though, I found three hangars for R60 each - the three bottom guitars are hung from them. They are generally intended for gardening equipment etc, but with a bit of tape around the arms to protect the necks and headstocks, they are a pretty cheap alternative until I finalise what I am going to do.

The thought of one of my guitars bouncing off that tiled floor from that height makes mine all sleep in cases ?

I agree with you Nick, mine also sleep safely in their cases,,, its a pity though because guitars are made to be admired (when they're not being played), ?,, Giggsy, be careful with the cheaper hangers as I also used similar ones to you and the plastic fused with the guitar neck and left a bad mark (the chemical in the plastic reacted with the neck somehow,,), you did state that you wrapped a bit of tape on yours but check it out often in case it damages the finish on your guitar necks.

The Proel hangers are pretty cheap - I think I paid R80 for two about a year ago.

Be careful with "other" hangers - they often use PVC for the cushioning, which will react with certain guitar finishes.

I would say just stick with what you have and keep the rest in cases/ if you have more.

You have 8 already up, I am sure the others will not be sad if they live in there comfy cases...

My 2 guitars sleep, on the couch, on the floor, leaning against my washing basket, ontop of my amp, under my bed.............. They get played thats what counts

I fully agree with Nick.......my guitars will NOT hang on any hanger on any wall........they stay in their cases......

About them being admired....... the only people who will ever admire and appreciate what they are looking at are those who KNOW what they are looking at.
Most people, even my wife says to me "they are all just guitars, you know the diffs, more happiness to you!" ....... (Dah!!!)

BTW. Only "Invited" people ever come into my guitar room in any case..... ?

Thanks guys all for the comments and the tips.

The hangars for the top row of guitars were all bought from guitar shops (they were the hangars that they were using to display their guitars). I have had those up for over a year now and so far there have been no problems with chemical reactions/falling etc. I guess stores that rely on profits from sales of merchandise wouldnt take a chance displaying their wares with inferior hangars.

The three new ones on the bottom row are a different story though... I want to have all my guitars on the wall for easy access (and if I am honest I suppose to show them off as well), but I still believe they are safer up on the wall than leaning against walls, furniture etc when you have a toddler and a couple of cats around.

Eeeyup. The greatest danger to my guitars is ME, I'm about two orders of magnitude more likely to cause destruction through some act of unimaginable stupidity, than a wall hanger with 80mm wall bolts is likely to magically fall down.

The two you have with round bases look like Proels.

Generally, if it's designed for guitars, it should take into account the finish issue (and I know the Proels do - I have eight of them). I know a store who had a batch made by a shopfitter who used PVC hosepipe for cushioning and they ended up with a half dozen high-end Musicman, Gibson and Ibanez guitars with green stains on the necks.

I also hang all my guitars so I can grab or replace them at a moment's notice. They are out of harm's way as long as you don't leave 'em plugged in (you only do that once) and they stay acclimatised to the room.

I was into this a while ago and bought the hercules locking wall unit to try it out, I think it was R170-00. After my wife bumped my warlock off with the hoover the warlock now stays on a stand in the far corner where it can't be touched and my others stay in their cases stashed away. Once I get my music room up and going, I'm going to build a mulitple floor stand where I can hold 3-4 during jam sessions, but besides that, they're going to be cased and stashed unless I'm using that particular guitar.

The Herc wall mount. I chucked the crappy wall screws and used 2 6mm rawl bolts, I'm going to be getting rid of mine if you're interested giggsy???

I do like the 3-way stand though.

Agree, no way do I trust those little screws they include with the Hercules ones. Rawl bolts, wow ? I haven't gone that far, just replaced the default wall plugs with nice long (80 mm I think) ones.

Rawl bolts didn't even save my ass because the lead was still in when my wife suicided into it with the hoover. doh

two words for you = Snap Jack cables... (ok thats 3 words, but only 2 start with capital letters)

my Snap Jack cable saved my guiatr from being ripped from the wall , twice in the same weekend I had bought the cable.. so i figure the cable has paid for itself!
