I can only imagine how interesting a blind test would be between say older Les Pauls or Fender Strats and modern day ones.... :-\

No I think that a test like that would be great. It would be easy to get a great many opinions - not necessarily informed opinions - by having the guitar recorded by the same player through the same amp, and then putting the results on the net - displaying them in random order for anybody who takes the test (so that there's no bias based on the order in which people listen to them).
It'd also be good to randomly select say, your '59 LPs and your '59 reissues, and make sure that the player can't actually see the guitars he or she is playing - as a double blind.
My suspicion is that on average they'd be the same, but the originals might win out due to the different (and much more varied) pickups. I'm so not convinced by the dimarzio video - because there's such a good chance that his 'burst is exceptional, and the reviewer's reissue is a little lackluster.
Re the article: if this fungus treatment works - works on violins, cellos, acoustic guitars - it'd be very interesting to see whether it has
any discernible effect on solid-body electrics. I'm guessing little to none.
