Best software for learning songs?

Can I get a recommendation on some freeware for learning songs?

I was using amplitube Fender - which is phenomenal for the purpose (being able to hear a great guitar sound along with the track was perfect) but my PC died, I'm not looking at a new one until a certain piece of software comes out, and my audio box is firewire (it seemed a great idea at the time) so it doesn't work with my laptop - so no amplitube for a while.

So I've been using my VLC player to slow down tracks for working them out. But what it doesn't allow me to do is to set start points so that I can easily listen to the same lick over and over as I'm trying to work it out. Resetting is annoying and inaccurate.

Is there a piece of freeware designed for this purpose?

Just kidding...what a nice tool to have. Wasn't aware of this cool application.

Well, it's the same as people used to do slowing down 45s to 33 and whatnot. Only difference is that these programs very cleverly keep the pitch constant. ?

Also, you don't have to keep lifting and replacing the needle.

Also, you can't wear out an MP3 ?

Speaking of which...where can one buy a portable "record player" these days....do they (still) make them? I have a LOT of 45's and 33's which I want to revisit ?

Have a look at this site:

There are a few tools available for free, two of which I have found particularly useful (MP3 Speed and MP3 Cutter). With the first one you can slow down your MP3 to whatever speed you need while preserving the pitch. The second one can be used to cut licks from the MP3 so you can listen to them selectively.

You can also slow down a song using Windows Media Player, just go to the options, or plugings section (scout around) and it will give you a chance to choose how much you want it slowed down.

Btw. Amplitude Fender, that isnt freeware is it? Unless I'm reading your post wrong

No it's not. But as per my post, I can't use it at the moment so I'm not keen on buying another product in the meantime. As I said, I can slow on VLC. What I can't do is easily set start and stop positions like I could do in Amplitube.

Vic: portables I don't know about except for used (gumtree might offer a few), but it's not too hard to find good record players. DJs use them to pretend they're musicians.
