Hi
I have become a bit of a peddle geek in my old age and with it unfortunately has come an annoying prejudice against anything cheap, standard or non "boutique!"! So after reading some interesting reviews on the new cheap range of Danelectrro Cool Cat "Boutique" Clones I was intrigued and particularly when I read that they had to bring out a v2 range of certain models due to "lawsuite" reasons, I had to take the plunge and pay £35 for an Transparent Overdrive v1 that I tracked down on ebay (UK).
All I can say is .......Amazing.....like really proper amazing! Straight away it has gone on my pedalboard and kicked off my original TS9 and my Keeley modded TS9, and even though there is still space for my fulltone fulldrive, I seldom use it as the combination of the Trans Overdrive with my Xotic AC Booster is becoming my favourite sound!
Really not trying to boast my so called "fancy" pedals, rather trying to say that cheap is not necessarily bad! And that this range of Danelctro pedals are worth checking out as they are pretty cheap. Ugly as poop, not very knob practical but I can handle an ugly thing if it delivers the tone I am hearing in my head!
I have also heard good things about the Fuzz model and the Drive model but not played these myself.
Of course you need to consider that certain pedals react differently with different amps and the guitar and guitarist also play their little part!
Thoughts?

I have always also heard amazing stuff on the Danelctro pedals, especially the OD and fuzz, and chorus............
Now if only I can find one in SA to try out ☹
What amp are you running it with???

i've just bought a dano fab echo for $15. rave reviews about them. going to mod it to have controllable delay and improve the wet/dry mix and feedback roof. great value for $ ?

Does a TS9 not qualify as a "cheapish" pedal? Always seemed priced mid-range at most to me... 1K at your average store after discount as opposed to bottom of the range R800?
To answer your question though... it's my opinion that there are so many factors affecting tone that the "best" pedals are actually just those that work with the biggest variety of set ups/rigs with good results...

i think i read once that the danelectro is supposed to be comparable to the timmy. but you read a lot on the intermenets.

i read that the V1 is pretty much a timmy. the V2 is the "politically correct" one. ?

Hello
Sorry I was away getting married! To answer earlier question I am using a Cornford Hurricane amp and my guitar for the last few gigs has been the Strat Ultra. I guess the tube screamer is on the upper end of mid priced (£95rrp) but it also seems to be the pedal a lot of boutique makers are trying to better. Anyway there are many variables that make a good tone so simply buying any piece of equipment to try and sound like someone else or based purely on someone else's review is probably not best practice.
But at around £30 a pop, I think I will try and gradually collect them all, especially the v1 models!

I have had great success with danelectro gear and have been using the dano "reel echo" for a few years now. It does a great sim of a tape echo ,warble and all and looks very cool . I wouldnt mind giving one of theses drives a go being a huge ts fan myself.

Dunno if Daelectro is readily available in SA. I've seen them on Amazon etc.

The V1 pedals are clones of boutique designs, but all using SMD, cheaper quality parts. The transparent drive is based on Paul C's Timmy, The Drive is based on the OCD and the Fuzz on the Frantone Peach Fuzz. Certainly better than any Boss/Ibanez clone, which what many of the Chinese made pedals are. They are true bypass with 3PDT witch, unlike many of the DPDT options using a millenia bypass circuit. For the money they can't be beat. Danelectro don't have an agent in SA to my knowledge, so you need to buy online... That said, the prices of the Transparent Overdrive have soared to the $100 mark, you can buy a Timmy for around $250, hand made, all through hole with much better parts, and will hold its value... so weigh it up.
Cheers

considering the fact that you can't buy the V1's new, I would be inclined to say that they would probably also hold their value, and possibly become more valuable. they are lawsuit models, which perhaps makes them desirable too.

^^^ yea,I always want stuff other people get suede for ?

Desirable, yes, but the parts are cheap a$$ SMD, oh and the opamp is NOT the same since it wasn't/isn't available in SMD format. If you can get it for cheap, go for it, but at $100+ I'd rather pay double and get 'the real thing', but then I'm weird that way I guess... LOL
