I used to work for the Shure distributors and I have seen more than my fair share of rip-offs. They all perform badly where in many cases the only similarity between the original and the rip-off is the appearance. These rip-offs are cleverly disguised to look like the originals but fall way short on performance and reliability.

Everyone claims to have a mic that is just like the SM 57 or 58, only better, and they all end up falling by the wayside as the originals keep going from strength to strength.

For me the test would be to see how the GLS mics hold up after 10 or more drop tests. Something that will almost certainly happen in a live staging environment.

To the OP, the Audix i5 is another alternative that comes in a bit cheaper than a 57 (last time I checked), and gets some good reviews. I borrowed one from a friend for a while, it did the job well. Not sure if that helps you. I ended up picking up a mint 57 with stand and cable off gumtree for 1100 iirc.

I love this.

I have also personally see a 6" nail hammered into a piece of good old SA Pine and then the presenter plugging it in and using it to present a seminar.

yeah i checked this http://ryansound.com/?p=77 out. they sound ok, not the real deal. still, they are about a 7th of the price, and to my ears i'd say less than 7 times worse. So they are probably worth it.. the audix is actually the same price as the SM, on take 2 at least. there is an SM57 in the classifieds which i'm pretty interested in, so i just thought i'd check out take 2 and found this thing. pretty interesting. so tomcat, let me see if i've got this; you don't mind how it sounds, but the only thing thats really important is that it can be runover by a few trucks ?

For me the sound is paramount. More important in the live sound world is that should a microphone be abused, it has a good chance of survival ans till sound good.

Edit: BTW if you are looking for a more budget mic to a SM-57 then the Shure PG-57 is a serious contender.

Mr TM is selling a SM57 with Mini Boom Stand and cable for R1000.00.....Good deal....Might be worth looking at.

there is also the Shure SM48, i purchased one the other day for a little over R800, and its also built like a tank and sounds pretty good to my ears.

SM48 is a really good mic for the price....only real difference to a 58 is that it has slightly more handling noise...

I'm a big fan of their condenser microphones.

Not such a big fan of their low to mid priced dynamic mics though. They tend to sound a bit brittle and harsh to me. To me the comparable budget shures like the PG series sounds better IMO, but that is just me.

I agree with Tom here. I have had a PG58 for some time now and I have been really impressed. Never had a problem with it either.
