Beginner/Intermediate Electric Guitar Kit

Hi,
I already have beginner acoustic guitar and I can play quite a few songs but I want to start some rock stuff now. So I am looking for a good beginner/intermediate electric guitar set (guitar, decent amp etc...). I couldn't find it anywhere on the internet (not even Telefunken's website).
So is this guitar and amp any good? The company seems to have gotten good reviews?

If not what is a good kit for a resonable price (R1000 to R2500)?

At that price, a squire of better, a yamaha Pacifica with a small practice amp!

Check out gumtree and wait for something cheap to come on there, you'll get much better stuff than bidorbuy. No name guitars like that will sound bad and will just frustrate you more unfortunately.

ja i thought it was a bit strange, especially for that price. I also saw an Aria bundle at a music store's website for about R2000. This any good?

yeh aria is at least better known in the music circles.

as someone above has said... look at a squier pack or a yamaha pacifica with a roland micro.. something like that wouls stand you in better stead. i have seen some decent strat copies by the name of sx which for the price may be worth looking at. certainly not worse than some squiers i have seen. alternatively lurk on junkmail and gumtree and wait for a bargain..

Flatfourfan on the forum here is selling a good little amp for R650 and you can get a brand new Cort X-1 at Marshall for R1100, you dont need to buy a kit specifically to get started.

If you live in a estate/complex you could look at Vox's Voxamp which I saw you can now get for less than R1000 which is a PC - Guitar interface.

Also as suggested, the second hand market would have the best bargains.

BUT if you dont know much about electric guitars and amps, you could still get ripped off.

The choices are to go with a knowledgable friend or visit a good shop like The music company and let the staff assist you, I have been recently to get a starter guitar and amp for a friend and the staff were excellent.

Also, I believe it's guitar month at Bothner's so maybe also pop in to their stores and see what they have in your budget.

If I was you, I'd look into buying a second hand guitar rather than a really budget entry level set-up like that just because it's new.

I bought an Ibanez GIO for R700 that simply rips and I've seen a similar one on junkmail for the same price, nice guitars to learn on and you won't grow out of it overnight. Shop around and you can get a quality backstage/ practice amp for a few hundred. I can see you getting set up with decent 2nd hand gear for under R1500-00.

This looks like a good combination. I'm pretty sure you could get a new amp and still be in budget of R2500, take a look at the Vox Pathfinder, Roland Cube 15X, Frontman 15G.

I got my acoustic guitar from the music company and they were very good, so I will probably look there.

This looks quite good to me. Only thing is you can't be sure thats the real picture and its in good condition.

I think that you're on the right path here.

The Ibanez GR's (gio's) are not bad guitars, I've got one and it's better made than many of the other branded entry level guitars. They're easy to play, have thin necks and take a beating.

I've seen branded good quality amps for the R700 mark, marshall, fender, vox etc, for an entry level amp, you don't need more than 20w. Stay away from the party packs, you're almost always paying for junk that you're not going to use.

All you do is request to test the gear before you buy it, I'd never buy something that I couldn't test..........there is a lot of gear out there, take your time in deciding and ask tonnes of questions.

I also think you're on the track. But let me add some more confusion ?

I think you should blow your entire budget on the guitar. Better, in my opinion, to have a decent guitar and no amp, than a crappy guitar and a crappy amp. Spend R2,000 on a guitar, and wait to pick up a cheapy practise amp for next to nothing.

You can still hear yourself on an electric without amplification and will happily be able to practise. But a bad guitar will often be difficult to play and inhibit your progress.

I'd also go for Ibanez and Yamaha over Fender Squier guitars. A fair number of the Squiers can be really bad and trade on the Fender association. Not all of them. Many are good. But Ibanez and Yamaha are more consistent, in my opinion. First prize would be a Yamaha Pacifica. Those are probably the best bang-for-buck beginners' guitars in existence.

Singe is right...........my guitar was played through a microphone input on my mums old hifi........spend the dosh on the best guitar that you can get.

You can also look at Cort X-2s second hand for R1100-1300 which is a very very good guitar.

Also the Roland Cube 15x's can now be bought for R1100 new but I would personally recommend the Line 6 Spider IV 15W for R1300 new.

I believe Music Cnnection offers a cable and bag free with each new guitar purchased.
