Hi..

So recently I've gone all haywire with recording GAS and got an interface (Focusrite Saffire 6 USB) and a mic (Rode NT-3) and I've been having fun recording away the past week. I've been using a pirated version of Cubase 5 that I got to toy around with with electronic music while I was a student, but since I have (a little) money nowadays I'm feeling a bit guilty, so I've decided to go legal. So I got reaper (who can afford cubase anyway?), ported my projects over, and uninstalled cubase.

So far it seems ok... a few things to get used to but I'll get over that. One thing I do miss is some of the bundled vst's, so I'm posting here just to get some recommendations for free vst plugins. Anyone have suggestions? In particular guitar related ones, and a synthesizer.

(while typing this I came across http://www.musicradar.com/tuition/tech/the-13-best-free-vst-plug-ins-in-the-world-today-277953/7#content which is a pretty cool resource, fyi.)
I was actually thinking in the previous week of starting a thread listing all the free VST's & plugins. ?

Reaper is great, works wonderfully. Note you do actually still need to buy it if you work with it commercially if I'm not mistaken.

There are a few free VST's from Native Instruments as well most notably Guitar Rig Player.

    http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/guitar-rig-4-player/

I have some more in my favorites list, I just need to go through it and sort it a bit.

idd it is not free, it's $40 for the discounted license. Which is dirt cheap for what you're getting.

      I'll check out guitar rig...
Hey dee, thanks for the info about guitar rig, I am downloading it now, looks pretty cool!
Guitar Rig is awesome - all I use these days - 4 is slightly better than 3, more presets, but 3 is defintely still worth the money. I'm now looking for a second hand Kontrol pedal...
Check out the Bootsy plugins (variety of sound), all free, all really quite good (it's eq, compressors, reverb, tape etc)

Also for amp sims check out the LePou amp sims, it's just the "heads" so you'll need an impulse loader (voxengo boogex, KeFir both free) with some of the free impulses, for high gain stuff these shit-all-over anything you can get with guitar rig.

I'll post a clip I did using them so you can hear:

It's just a quick test I did a while ago
              P.S:

I'm also undoing the error of my ways, slowly but surely, and going all legal and/or free with software AND starting to buy cd's again.
              (Even bought Win 7 ultimate)

It's not even about the money, it's about: if I don't support the bands and software that I enjoy and use, they wont be able to carry on making the software and music that I enjoy and use.
At the end of the day piracy effects me personally, so I'm going legit.
It's like kicking yourself in the balls ???
I agree, people pay me for my work, it's only fair that I do the same. I didn't feel at all guilty when I genuinely couldn't afford software etc that I used, but thats different nowadays.

                    Cool, which LePou is that?

I tried my hand at the Lecto beta (free LePou Dual Recto sim) a while ago with Recabinet impulses but it sounded like s*t for me. But that's just 'cos I don't know wtf I'm doing, I've heard guys get some of the best tones I've ever heard south of a Sneap album with it.
It was the LE456 into Lecab with some free impulse, can't remember which one, a good preamp helps though.
Installed Guitar rig last night, gonna take a bit of time to find my bearings, but so far I am really impressed. There is actually quite alot of stuff on the free version. Very Nice ?
I'm having trouble finding a nice free drumkit vst. recommendations?

I battled to find anything decent in the shareware/free stable for drums so eventually went the Addictive Drums Route. I am very happy with AD.

The other popular one is EZ Drummer.
Stillwell have some very nice plugins at low license costs for Reaper users.

I've got the Major Tom Compressor and the 1973 EQ strip. Both very nice... ?

The 1973 is particularly nice to colour guitar tracks. Very smooth.... 8)

I am using "My Drumset" with reaper, its doing ok so far. You have nothing to loose (except some bandwidth) as its free.

Ok, so if you haven't found it already, http://www.kvraudio.com is the one-stop comprehensive resource for free VST plugins.

I'll make it easy for you.

                                  Guitar related:

                                  http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php?mode=results&st=adv&soft%5B%5D=i&soft%5B%5D=e&soft%5B%5D=h&soft%5B%5D=d&soft%5B%5D=w&type%5B%5D=6&type%5B%5D=65&f%5B%5D=vst&linux=1&osx=1&win=1&free=1&sf=0&receptor=&de=0&sort=1&rpp=100

Those are ALL free so that should keep you busy for a while.

As far as free effects/processors go, there are two developers that, for me, that are at the top.

                                  Bootsy:

                                  http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/downloads/

                                  Antress:

                                  http://antress.er-webs.com/

                                  As far as synth goes:

                                  http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php?mode=results&st=adv&soft%5B%5D=i&type%5B%5D=0&f%5B%5D=vst&linux=1&osx=1&win=1&free=1&sf=0&receptor=&de=0&sort=1&rpp=100

There are 878 free Vsti's there for your perusal.

Take a few and get back to me in the morning.

                                  Cheers ?
878 free VSTi's lol. That's exactly the problem, too many!

I found this thread on the Reaper forums helpful to filter out the better ones, at least in this person's opinion:
                                    http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=52382

I used the free OatMeal synth a bit lately, very impressive. Lots of downloadable presets.
