Hey guys,
Check out my new toy. This is a Portuguese guitar or in the local lingo as they say, Guitarra Portuguesa.
Its unique to Portugal and is used a lot in thetraditional Fado style music of which there are different styles.
It has a weeping sort of sound, difficult to explain and i guess it does have some similarities to a mandolin, albeit bigger.
The top is spruce, the sides and back are a wood called "Macio" typically from Portugal.
Those are wood inlays in the top. Neck is mahogany with an ebony board.
Tuning is strange for me and goes DABEAB from top to bottom.
Great sound for the size of the thing. Im trying to learn how toplay this but it is quitethe departure from regular 6 string guitar technique with some quite strong emphasis on fingerpicking (picture country picing...)
Anywho, enjoy the pics and thanks for looking.. Oh, the snail type effect on theheadstock indicates it is from Lisbon. A teardrop shape means it is from Coimbra and "head" figure means it is from Porto. All of which play different Fado styles..
Try if you like artists such as "Mariza", Carlos do Carmo. I must warn you all though it isnt for everyone. Very melancholic.
