I'd just like to point out that there are two sides to this: yes, learning how to perform maintenance tasks on your own guitar can bring down costs, be satisfying and possibly quicker; however, just like you might prefer to have a qualified mechanic under your hood, you might be prepared to shell out for the relevant skills, and in that case you should be perfectly entitled to expect a decent job for your money. This sometimes does not happen, and anyone who has a grievance because they've paid for work that's been done shoddily is not 'in the wrong' because they didn't just do the job themselves. That's a poor argument I've heard one too many times. An exchange of money for service is the norm in any industry, and the world of guitar techs should be no different.
In my experience there are actually a few good techs in Joburg, BTW - it's just that they seldom take the necessary time for the attention to detail that is required. What usually happens is that they're too pressed for throughput (again, in my opinion). Guys who have the skills to do a better job simply aren't doing as much.
