Speed Kills - Michael Angelo Batio

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, probably a few times, but hey it's not in the first page of topics, so oh well.

Speed kills is ultimate for those who want to gain accuracy and speed in alternate picking, legato and sweep picking.

Just because Batio's excercises are very concise, so they don't waste your time, and they absolutely get the job done. Also, his humour as aged and dry as it is puts me in stitches.

I've always been curious about MAB's training vids - what does he mean 'give you the keys to the Lamborghini'? I can't imagine the secret to playing fast (and clean) being anything other than practice practice practice...?

well it's more like he gives you the parts of the lamborgini and you have to assemble it. the parts being concise effective exercises that actually help build both accuracy and speed. of course that by itself won't make you the best player in the universe. but it helps.

The Batio videos are pretty good, also if you want great shred instructional stuff try the John Petrucci Rock Discipline DVD - It's so good that it's won awards ? others to look out for are the Rusty Cooley ones (cause even if you don't like him the guys got incredible technique) Shawn Lane's is also really good but finding it is pretty hard, Paul Gilberts are great for phrasing advice as well as technique and there are quite a few Guthrie Govan videos on youtube were in quite a short amount of time you can learn a hell of a lot - and to me the holy grail of advanced technique are the books Creative Guitar by Guthrie Govan ? Other books worth looking for are Dan Hearles Jazz Improvisation books (great one on Modes but the name escapes me) and David Sandole's Lydian Chromatic Concept, but only if you like really screwed up artists like Allan Holdsworth ? cause if your brain isn't a bit on the left field the Lydian Chromatic thing won't help much and from a theory perspective it's quite a brainful ?

to add to that, the ultimate technique for metal guitar book by troy stetina is super ultimate. i've read rock discipline, and it was disorganised and almost useless next to troy stetina's books. can't comment on the rock discipline video though?..

This is pretty funny, definitly a case of one mans trash being another's desire. I've never read the Rock Discipline book but I've got 3 instructional videos with Troy Stetina and I don't think they're necessarily "bad" but I definitly think they're way too basic, for the same argument though I've never read his books ?

I don't like Cooley's playing but his teaching technique seems to be very good, what I've seen on Youtube. He lays out logical ways of understanding scale and mode patterns pretty well. I might order some of his stuff.

Guthrie Govan is an amazing teacher, agree. The few short clips I've seen did indeed convey a lot of information, some of it new to me, very logically.

i've also seen Mr stetina's videos dude, they're scat. Hated them. but the books literally take shredding technique and put it under a microscope to -in great detail- etch away at all the bad technique you may have and rebuild. ^^

Agreed, I'm not a big fan of his playing - I think a lot of the riffs from Outworld are amazing but the solos lack composition and emotion but his instructionals as you've said are very nice and informative ?

Look out for the books Creative Guitar they are honestly the best guides to guitar playing I've ever read through ?

Very cool indeed ? Seriously though the Guthrie Govan books are like a guitarists bible ?

+1 Chad. Govan's stuff is potent.
A few books i have and can happily recommend are Petrucci's Wild Stringdom, Joe Pass' Chord book, Holdsworth's Melody Chords for guitar, Al DiMeola's Guide to chords, scales & arpeggios.

On the video side, i found Petrucci's Rock Discipline, Lane's Power Licks, Marty Friedman's Melodic Control, Gambale's Chop Builder and Modes no mystery very helpful.
I'm trying to track down Steve Morse's Powerlines & Highlights DVDs.
Brett Garsed is on my list too.
