How does send and return really work?

How does send and return work on a full valve amplifier? No one gave ever gave me a straight answer, i'll guitarforum a try. All i want to know is when the signal goes through the send>ambience pedals>return, where in a valve amp does that happen, Before or after the pre amp section? Or does the send and return samples with the input, and then go to the pre amp section? In my case its a "Peavey Delta Blues amp" Is send/Return a standard, or does it differ from manufacturers? I got some schematics, but a bit comfused in the way the signal flows. it's just something i found,i've seen alot of different ways people set up pedals,i'm not big on effects so i would never use that,all i use is a overdrive,compressor and a wah(well that's all i plan to use,i have a ME-50 ATM)
