Hey guys.
So I got a quote from Magnatech for Alnico V bar magnets, 62mm X 12.5mm X 3.5mm (Same dimensions as the stewmac one's)
It works out to R20 per unit, however, a minimum order of 100 units must be made.
Would anyone be interested in sharing the order with me?
The stewmac magnets cost R50 a piece plus shipping, so this is a good opportunity to grab a couple magnets for real cheap.

Sweet I might be keen. Do you know offhand if they are the right size to be able to be put in a P-90 or to swap out with ceramic bars on strat pups?

Im in for 12 magnets. R240. Now all you need is another order of 88 magnets! Crazy man. How many do you need?

Hey makepeace, yes they do fit P90.
I drew up the P90 using the specs in the Jason Lollar winding book, that should be the standard size.
The magnets fit perfect.

Hey Ryan, I don't need many, like 10 or so. But I'll just have to wait and see how many other people want in first!
If someone pulls out, or if not enough people are interested, then I'm stiffed with the bill, and a life's supply of bar magnets!

In that case, you can count me in for 2. I only have one P90, with alnico II's in it. Would be nice to see the difference. The II's are a lot mellower than I expected.
From that I'm guessing they are a bit big for ceramic strat pickups then?

on the subject.. is there a place where one can find out the relative magnet strengths of alnico's for use in pickups? or does anybody know? ie a5 is more punchier than a2 etc, but where do 3, 4 and 8 fit in? i read some where that its counter-intuitive so would just like to clarify.

cool thanks mike. yea i figured. i just read that a8 is in between a2 and a5, but closer to a2 in terms of tone ???
so what should i go for? these a2's are far too mellow for my liking, but i don't want it to be harsh either.

What application? What pup? Pots? What do you want to change? What do you want to sound like?

well its in a dark sounding archtop, p-90 pup, 250k tone and vol pots with a 0.047 cap. as i say at the moment its very mellow, and not very articulate. the highs are kind of blurry. i'd like it to sound a little more transparent. don't mind experimenting though, its not like i need a straight fix right now or anything.

P90 have 2 mags which i guess you know. I'd recommend either an a2 and a5 or a3 and a4 for a clearer more acoustic like tone. A3s sound like a2s But a touch more open, my fav neck mag. And a4s are pretty neutral and won't make it sound thin like an a5.

about the pots, when i installed it i just thought - single coil, so go for 250k's - but i didn't realize how mellow it'd be. will try a 500k sometime soon.

Yip man my one Epi is crazy dark. First try get it in the ballpark of what you want, then adjust flavour with mags. And remember not can always roll tone down, not up ?
