Hi
Please help.
Since there is no microphoneforum.co.za, I have no choice but to come and ask my guitar friends for some help.
I am a guitarist by hobby, and it seems that I will be doing a few solo gigs very soon, where I also need to do (main) vocals.
The setup is an amp with two channels. I will chase my acoustic through the one and a mic through the other. Not sure how that is going to come out, but I am not too concerned about for the moment.
I do need to buy a mic very soon and I am not Shure which one to buy (pardon the pun).
The music is folky, indie, mellow stuff - so no growls or screams (don't know if that makes a difference).
There will not be any effects on it for a start - spare some tone and reverb on the amp.
I don't have thousands of bucks, but I do want to buy something that will last me a couple of years.
I await your input eagerly.

Ideally get a Shure SM58 if you can stretch that far. They are the industry standard for good reason - they sound good, have fairly low feedback and handling noise and can take decades of gigging abuse (mine have paid for themselves many times over in the last two decades and are still going strong). Alternatively get the lower cost version, the SM48, which is surprisingly good, but suffers a little more handling noise.

The quitesential vocal mic has always been the Sure SM58 and I checked it out a few months ago when I was buying. I tested side by side with a RHODE M1 and found the RHODE had a fuller frequencey response that just suits my voice. The SM58 is good, just the technology is a bit old while th RHODE is newer. Should pick one up for less that R1500. Most music stores will let you test out top quality mics before buying so give them a test run. You can't go far wrong with the M1 though.

Thank you for the help.
That is all I needed to know.
