Jazz in Cape Town

Any recommendations? I see the Green Dolphin is now in the Waterfront. Doesn't that mean it's gone larney? I liked venues like Rumours In JHB or even Sat. afternoons at the old Alba in Braamfontein. Just a perception perhaps that the Waterfront would be a wee bit lounge lizardy - jazz- background music to you quaffing your oysters type of thing.

Hi Lindsay, there's a very nice down to earth place called "Streetway 55". It's off Hope street, Gardens. It's a bit of a tricky place to find, as you have to turn off Hope street, drive down an alley to a big parking lot where there's a hotel. And it's in the hotel.

I'll get back to you with better directions, but they have great jazz there every Wednesday night.

Cafe Sophia on rondebosch main road.
Its above the Pick n Pay and on Sunday nights theres usually great performances.
Its mainly SACM players and so the standards usually pretty great.

There is another place whose name is evading me right now where the likes of Mark Fransman and co play often, and theres open mic night.

Where is the SA College of Music? Is it in Cape Town? I thought you had to go private or got to Uni if you wanted to do further Music studies - or do a Unisa thing ...

Well its not in Cape Town, but In Stellenbosch, go to Lucky Store on Sunday afternoons from like 2pm untill 7pm, there is lots of Jazz there. Very informal, but great none the less

I think they are affiliated with the University, if not part of the University. They use the University premises, music library and the Baxter hall, but I have no idea what the story is behind the name.

Thanks for all those venues - sounds good. Seems like Sunday's the day - either Stellenbosch - Lucky Store or Rondebosch - Cafe Sophias. Then Dubliners during the week at a later date. Nice to know.

Cafe sofia has got jam sessions on thursday nites, and im almost always there. Really cool vibe.

Swingers (in wetton) is also a cool vibe. They've got jam sessions on mondays from 10pm till the early hours of the morning. Swingers is a bit more established and has been going for many years. They also have jazz on other nites.
