NGD: Gibson Hummingbird

Reinhard

I have wanted to get a Gibson acoustic for quite some time, but everytime I end up getting another electric.
When this hummingbird popped up on Gumtree, Stratisfear gave me heads up and I contacted the seller. This afternoon the guitar landed in CT.
Plays perfectly with 12's on. Nice warm balanced tone.

The problem with Gibson Hummingbirds is.... just kidding. Awesome. I'm envious. Looks a real beauty. Bet it sounds warm as toast.

Whew that is pretty.
What year? Wood etc?

Reinhard

Thanks guys
I am speaking under correction, but I believe it is a 2003 with mahogany back and sides and a sitka spruce top.

Thanks everyone! This one has definitely been well looked after. The strings are a bit old, about 3 months. So if I get a gap today I want to go get new strings and maybe put 11's on. I'm not used to 12's anymore ? I looked the guitar over it really is immaculate, inlay work is perfect and the fretboard has some nice wood. I may even put some fret Dr on, but at the moment it looks fine.I have some pictures from the previous owner which show the colour a bit better.

It is always good to experiment. I found that if the action is fairly low (around 2mm) with some relief, that one hardly notices the heavier 0,012's compared to 0,011"s, they certainly will be less buzz prone with the added advantage of increased response and fat tone. Heavier strings just bring out the potential of any acoustic so much better.
The Hummingbird's short scale also means less string tension which allows for relative easier playability.

+1. Get it really nicely set up, put .13s on, don't try to bend it like Beckham, and you'll be getting the best out of it IMO.

Reinhard

What acoustic strings would you guys recommend? I'm not clued up on acoustics.
The previous owner had a humidifier in it the last 2 weeks, but I think the coastal air will do it good ?

Reinhard

Yeh the guitar came from Jhb. Do guitar stores sell hygrometers?

Reinhard

Thanks Zohn! Appreciate the links. +1 thanks
