Amazing freaking clip. In situations like this he comes off as really shy. And listen. He really is a blues man. I'm starting to think that blues guys make the best rock 'n roll.

What a shame. A lot of those '60s music heroes don't stack up that well as people unfortunately. In fact out of all of them, probably the only one I'd actually like to meet is Ringo ? (although George is my '60s icon).

Vaguely relevant anecdote: My ma told me about how, when they were living in London for a year in '71, she got chatty with a woman at the laundrette who she said was married to a "pop star." Well, it turns out her name was Daltrey. "As in Roger Daltrey of The Who?!" "Yes, that's the one. He used to occasionally drive by in a Rolls Royce." I found out recently when we were looking at the place they lived on Google Street View, that she'd actually been for tea at Daltrey's house. To my eye-popping amazement, all she remembered was that it was, "very modern," but could give no details about punch bowls full of cocaine or midgets in cages or anything of that sort - as if she walzed into stadium rock gods' houses every other week.

But what she did remember was that Mrs. Daltrey really enjoyed the company because she seemed, "very lonely."

It really struck me that that's the flip side of the sex-drugs'n-rock'nroll.

Allegedly. There were certainly one or two instances where a drugged-up Hendrix was a danger to the lady he was with (and possibly to himself), there are also a lot of recollections from people who said that Hendrix was always very polite to women and treated them very well, showing none of the signs of the stereotypical black man wanting to show a white woman who was in charge now. Certainly he was no Ike Turner.

More generally, you have to decide for yourself to what degree you want to separate art from artist.

Take Jerry Lee Lewis, a drunk, bad tempered, married to his own cousin (the union was legal in his home state, but caused no end of a ruckus when he went to the UK, Mrs Lewis not being 16 yet). Should we write off his music because he was not a very nice person?

Picasso wasn't a very nice guy actually. Do we just discard all of his art?

An interesting question to ask ourselves, and maybe we should ask it because one of the few things that seems certain in life is that your idols will have feet of clay. Musicians are human. Humans are imperfect.

I don't think anyone's saying we should think less of someone's music if they happen to be a bit of a turd. Hell, I'd happily listen to music from a pedophile if it was good enough (actually, Jimmy Page - among probably rather a lot of others - technically fits this definition for his relationship with 14/15 year old Laurie Maddox in the '70s).

The fact is rock stars are generally bad boys, that's why they make good music. But paedophilia... that'll put me off an artist, i can't look at them them the same way.

Hitting women is NOT ON but you must understand that Hendrix was surrounded by leeches and druggies in the worst possible way, there must have been a few people who would just cause him to snap sometimes, especially in the extreme mindstate that he was in.

Sure. But do you no longer listen to The Who as a result? No. Even a monster can create something great. But understand me, I'm not saying that it entitles them to a free ride by any means - or that I'd cover up for someone because I think they're a great artist. F that.

But I'm also not going to suddenly imagine their work is bad because they are.

As you say, guys like Hendrix end up in circumstances that can really screw with your mind. He was surrounded by people who mostly meant him little good.

I don't think that "rock star" and "bad boy" go together. It's just that there's a whole circus that pitches itself around rock stars. When I saw "It Might Get Loud" I thought at The Edge came across as a bit of a w****er. Nice enough, wouldn't hurt a fly and helps old ladies across the road (probably by calling the UN and having the road shut down, but still...) but a w****er none the less. But then he hasn't lived a particularly normal life the last 30 years or so. It must do something to you to be surrounded by sycophants who tell you can have anything you want, everything you do is great, would you like another roady to turn your pedals on and off etc etc.

This doesn't mean that whatever they do is OK of course. However, and as I said already, we need to decide to what degree we separate art from artist. I think there has to be a lot of separation, otherwise you run into problems at some point: Wagner and anti-semitism, Clapton and his speech about sending immigrants back to where they came from, Jerry Lee Lewis and incest and paedophilia (thought the union was legal where he came from), Bowie and Nazi fantasies etc etc etc etc etc etc Start objecting to one and you will soon find yourself with lots of space on your cd shelves.

Also, of course, they're musicians. They don't actually know more than you or I do about politics, history, the ecology, the global economy etc etc or how to pick your way through the minefield of life. Probably not a good idea to adopt any of them as role models other than for their guitar playing.

Well said I totally agree! They're musical role models, not LIFE role models. But you remember how it feels to be a teenager.. some of my friends tried heroin just to be like Kurt Cobain, stupid i know.

But now seriously... what would it matter what they do in their "private" lives? You were turned on to them by what they performed aurally or visually for you, and that is how it should be. We all have terrible things in our lives that could make the average joe out there dislike you with a passion, and it stays your personal business. So in my mind, it wouldn't matter what type of person they are really, as long as there's magic coming out them fingers or whatever it is they do.

Sure, women beaters and pedophiles and rapists and and and and and and and and.... will live in peace as Bubba's bitch, but they still had/have magic to offer. MJ, whatever he was/was not guilty of, always delivered a spectacular performance. Who cares if he liked boys, who cares if he had hygiene probs while in the studio by not bathing for weeks getting a mix right... who cares... the end result is where its at...

But back to the video - wow! When Hendrix grabs a guitar at a picnic everyone listens! Even just sitting around with friends, his rhythm work is so compelling.
