I know it would probably be stupid to do it maybe not. And also this will sort of reveal my noobness about modding any guitar. Which i'm proud to say I am. Anyway, Is it possible to mod an acoustic guitar to add a magnetic pickup or to be able to use it for acoustic to distorted tones. I have tried just pluging in an acoustic into my pedal. My reason for he question is because of the lead singer of Wheatus. On all the videos especially the the hit teenage dirtbag he uses an acoustic and in the chorus he goes over to a very nice fat distortion. Now i know he pribably records in studio with an electric (maybe). But yeah. can it be done?
It can be, but I don't think it ever sounds quite the same as a solid body electric.
The classic example would be John Martyn who for years used a Martin D28 fitted with some kind of piezo pickup for an acoustic sound and a magnetic pickup mounted in the soundhole for more electric sounds. The latter went through a set of effects and then into a Fender amplifier.
More than one way to skin that cat. I recently put an entry into a GFSA competition where I took the under saddle pickup on one of my acoustics, fed that into my Boss amp and turned up the overdrive on the amp. As I said, it doesn't sound like a solid body electric guitar doing it that way. A magnetic pickup in the soundhole would have got me a lot closer soundwise.
So depends on what you want to do. Experimentation need not cost much.
