Well I am very tense when I pick and I go very fast ? Kinda like jeff hannerman,
Oh alright. How about a suggestion then... no biggie or anything. Tremolo picking, lets just say its alternate picking, whether its single notes, or double stops or triple stops... more than that would be strumming.
Now to gain speed, you have to be as relaxed as possible. Any tension you have is bound to give you problems later on... like a very sore shoulder, a sore wrist, a sore hand... oh what the hell, lets just throw tennis elbow and tendonitis as big words in. Now one of the monsters of picking is Malmsteen, along with Frank Gambale... i would like you to take a good look at their right hands. Then i would also like you to take a look at some Richie Kotzen stuff, maybe throw in some Rusty Cooley stuff, oh well, lets go all shred on ya and add in Chris Impelitterri...
So if u did some homework, you would see that their hands are extremely relaxed... limber... loose...
Now I would like you to check out some funk... for real... one of the instructors in it would be Ross Bolton. Now i dare you to try those rhythm exercises (being anywhere from 16th trips to 32nd note strumming), with a tense picking hand... and play it for more than two seconds... maybe something like 10 minutes... then see where you are having pain.
So people, please remove tension from your playing hands before the doctor gets unexpected money from you because you decided to tense up. However many strings you need to play, thats how many strings u have to use to practice your alternate picking/strumming... metronome... relaxed. This way it wont sound forced either... and you will be gentler on your strings... anyway, i hope this helps...
PS... right, now that i heard the clip (only once, so i'm not going to analyse it and figure out what he really is doing)... thats not tremolo picking... that is string skipping, or double picked arpegios or triple picked... which, once again goes to alternate picking, so u may call it tremolo picking if u wish... (look at an ancient example of "Eruption" for a nice tremolo picked line... you'll know it... its the single note attack sequence, pretty damn fast... can't miss it).... also interesting to note when he first tensed up, the definite gap in sound? Like he hooked? That is what you dont want... but hey, its not my video... if it helps u guys, enjoy... suffer later... its all part of rock and roll anyway... ?
