When it comes to Blues, Dan Patlansky is the Man!! Cleaner, more flawless playing I have not seen or heard in a long, long time, but he is by no means rigid or mechanical and plays with soul and feeling. Dan is my Blues Hero and in my opinion, in his lifetime, Dan will earn his place amongst the greats.
Dan is a great blues guitarist. However, he has not recorded truly inspiring original guitar work like the others I've mentioned. Blues is a rigid format (and rightly so, just like classical music) and if you don't stick to certain rules it's not blues anymore. Therefor guys like Dan will always be extensions of those who have gone before him. We have seen this over and over, starting with Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Clapton, SRV, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, etc etc. He needs to break out and record his defining guitar album whilst steering clear of traditional slide and blues styles. His latest effort sounds like thousands of other American indie or rock 'n roll bands who are all much better at doing that style of music anyway.
Don't get me wrong - I have seen him play quite a few times and I love Dan's playing, but I'm more likely to be inspired by guys who tread new ground with fresh melodic solo ideas, playing techniques and styles and infuse these into their original compositions.
