I think Mark K is fitting homself more into the songwriter role for quite a while now. He does it good I think. His guitar work seems to take a backseat to his message.
Or maybe the message is more than the guitar playing.
I am getting increasingly allergic to "music" where the only three things going on are technique, technique and technique.
Technique is good, but it should be an enabler, a tool, not the point.
My favourite Knopfler album is actually the first Dire Straits album. There's some great playing on there where the guitar parts fit into and enhance the greater structure or message of the song. I think particularly of "In The Gallery" (my favourite Knopfler solo), "Lions" and "Six Blade Knife".
Later on he did "Private Investigations" where, again, the guitar solo fits the mood and story of the song.
