Buckethead anyone?
PeteM
I like any guitarist who plays with his heart and not is head!
One particular guitarist I discovered though is Phil Palmer who was musical director for the Strat Pack concert, the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Fender Stratocaster. I so enjoyed his versatility that I did some research and found out that he is one of the worlds top session guitarists and can be found on just about anyone's CD. It seems that when you need a guitarist that has infinite flexibility then Phil is your man.
He has toured and played with: Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Tears for Fears, Tina Turner, George Michael, Elton John, Bryan Adams, Pete Townshend, Robbie Williams, Chris De Burgh, Wishbone Ash, Murray Head to name but a few. The full list of people he’s worked with is intimidatingly long!

Despite the loads of terrible songs he's delivered over the years (imo), the showtunes cr*p and bad singing etc, I still have to say Vai has got to be my personal best.
Then Petrucci, although he's sounding more and more like a videogame. He's transcended the speed at which shredding makes sense to the human ear.. or something.
Jason Becker - causes me severe depression whenever I listen to his unattainably superb playing. (Both for his sake: he'll never do it again, and mine: I'll never do it even once LOL.)
Also currently really enjoy the Trivium guys.
But the guy who really fries my brain lately is Per Nilsson from Scar Symmetry. I didn't see anyone else mention him? Unbelievable sweeping, complex tapping and smooth as butter legato, all at very high speeds. But best of all, he sounds like no-one else I've heard.

I had that album 2000 years ago, I think the guitarist was John Ellis, who I think replaced Hugh Cornwell in "The Stranglers"
I bought the 'Pure Mania' on special at the Hillbrow Record Library in 77 or 78

I'm really loving Richie Kotzen's blues/soul work lately.

Well, my fav guitarist would be the famous Al Ratcliffe, guess a no-brainer there, closely followed by ReneS and Norio.
Did anyone of the guys running this site gets my request for a raise in status from Newbie to Global Admin? I'd like to be able to impress my friends when I logs in here.
TIA
BTW, strangely no one mentioned Clark Kent who can shred faster than the speed of sound.
Lastly, has anybuddy listened to Jacob Zuma's guitar work on his hit single, "Bring me my machine heads"? So he'd be up there too.

Nice I like your taste... You need to add a few there
Go check out Michael Gulezian, Pierre Bensusan, Doyle Dykes, and the unstopabble Monte Mongomery...
Monte is only second best... behind the master Tommy Emmanuel... IMO of course ?

I agree with you Brent
What I dig the most about Monte is his attacking style, I suppose Tommy is the same.
Pierre Bensusan is good stuff DADGAD and all that
Another wild player although not acoustic is Tuck Andress, also very good, But I think Old Tommy is up there, his timing is incredible.

I've also got way too many favorite players to mention all here, but lately I'm well impressed with Matt Bellamy from Muse and Ian D'Sa from Billy Talent. Mold breakers both!
