Yes. The 21st, and I think it's a good line up for that night.
It's always nice to meet up with Keira, and it was pleasure to finally meet Evolucian and to listen to him play.
I'm glad that Keira started this discussion. I've been out the house the last couple of nights listening to live music, and you know there are lot of fine players around.
Wednesday we at Andy McGibbon's acoustic music forum. One highlight for me there was the duo of Richard Bruyns and Mike Burger. Very cool instrumental stuff - lap steel and fingerstyle. Richard has an approach to lap steel that can take it away from it's traditional turf of bluegrass and country. Mike is one of the best sounding acoustic players around - and I mean that. A great feel for the instrument and a great touch (I have often said that music shops should hire Mike to just sit around and play guitars because he always makes a guitar sound good).
Also at Andy's was Thomas Selmer-Olsen who is an accomplished musician, fine singer and gives a very convincing and well worked out solo performance. Well thought out arrangements allow him to present his songs in such a way that you don't get a sense of things missing or that he's making do with a strum-along. In particular he does some fine songs in an early 70s soul style.
Ja... I left TJs early (got a cold or something), but it was a great open mic night with some new faces. Again proof that there is talent in this town looking for outlets. Duos Guitarras got the evening off to a strong start and set the bar high with some very good playing. Tom Howden is a great musical story teller (he's on my bill for the 21st) and chose to do a set of hilarious Irish songs (though one, by Tom Lehrer, was more about the Irish than actually Irish itself). A young guy named Wayne popped up a month ago to do some fingerstyle stuff - mostly influenced by Leo Kottke. He was back again last night and this time played with greater confidence and showed more of what he can do.
I've posted details of the event on the 21st on the "events" board. Come along. There is talent in this town, and I've been lucky enough to get some of these talented people to play on that evening. 20 bucks admission! It's going to be a big bargain.
Note to self: Get out there more and listen to more live music.
