Cleaning off sticker gunk on a guitar

I picked up another ibanez Gio last night and I knew that I was in for a fun time when I saw the pictures on Bid or Buy. But then again R700, who's complaining.

I've taken off all the stickers besides the one under the strings and all came off without taking any paint or clear coat off, but on 3 places, I've got HUGE sticker crud left. What's the best way to remove if without damaging the paintwork or clearcoat?

I've checked online, but everything mentioned is not locally availible, so I want a locals input.

Anyone?

and it won't damage the paint or strip off the clearcoat?

Well , I used to use it to remove sticker gunk from painted model aircraft , without any damage to the painted or plastic parts , maybe try a bit on the back of the body first......... :?

Stay Soft and water dude, just use mix it bout 50/50 with water. Then use a cloth. Somehow it cleans of paper and glue like nothing ive seen before.

Googled this year ago when i restored my mothers flat cupboards ( which a moron had covered with that plastic wallpaper stuff ). It cleaned it off no effort, nothing else worked then.

I used very hot water on a cloth to get rid of a sticker on an RG. careful with your hands though ?

It depends on the finish used on the guitar.

A while back I got some dark-grey goo on the Morgan (I never found the source). I was worried about taking off the finish at the same time as the goo, so I gave McGibbon's a call. Andy knows my guitars and he told me I could use brasso in this case. It worked in this case but Andy did tell me that it wasn't appropriate for all finishes.

I tried some hot water last night and all it was doing was swirling the gunk around, leaving nothing on the cloth and nothing was coming off.

The finish seems to be a stained woodgrain with a laquer finish, It's very light and the final clear coat doens't seem to be that thick, so I'm going to try the least corrosive method first.

Peanut butter - don't laugh, it's the best thing for removing glue from any surface (obviously not paper).

I have often used peanut butter to remove sticky labels and glue residue from gloss surfaces so I know it works here is a Noddy guide to removing labels with peanut butter. http://www.ehow.com/how_2023764_remove-sticky-residue.html

Oh bugger, I never updated this............bought a bottle of goo gone and in under 5 min, it was gone.

no crap or anything left and it didn't damage the finish at all. Very happy......cheers Joel.

lol, I saw your post a while ago that you hated your gio and I actually wanted to ask why you hated it so much.

I bought this as a bit of a toy, it's action is among the lowest of any guitar that I've played, it plays super smooth and the neck is Sh*t fast and for R700 it can't be beat. This budget peice of crap plays a MILLION times better than the Epiphone special II that I just flowed.

The input jack is shot and I hate the bridge on it as well, so my plans are to floyd rose it with double locking and change out the pups for a set of HZ's (still to buy) or 81/85's that I have boxed at home. The body isn't basswood which was half the reason why it got my interest.

SO why did you hate yours?

What Gio was it?
