OK, my turn, what is "violining" please?
Violining is the timeless art of hammering on a note when you guitar's volume is all the way down, then, while you keep the note fretted, quickly max the volume knob on the guitar: it sounds sort of violin-like because you don't get any of the usual attack you get when picking a string. If you're quick on the guitar's volume control you can play whole solos like this. It sounds best with some distortion/overdrive and some reverb or echo.
Typically I find violining easiest on Strats, but if you reverse the control plate on a Tele like mine then the guitar's volume control is much easier to access with your picking hand.
