I dont quite know what all those Genre's mean ?

But I am sure I will find out 8)

it's more the tone and technique that I am after.
I love George Benson's tone and his phrasing, So will be looking at Wes Montgomery and taking it from there.

great advice for anyone learning jazz...... is widen your listening spectrum.as in get focussed on sax/trumpet and piano solos and draw influences from that don't restrict yourself to just listening to other jazz guitarists.........

I met a Jazz Guitar Teacher at Andy Mcgibbons on Saturday and he was giving me the same advice!
Listen to Jazz but dont restrict yourself to guitarists.
He actually recommended Diana Krall....

yeah for sure diana krall she has one of the most tasteful jazz guitarists playing with her .........and plays all the standards in a very dare i say "accessable " way not "outside" at all if you know what i mean .... a good way to learn the tunes........

jazz is all about knowing all the standards but playing them in your own way . no one in jazz mimics anyone elses version even at local gigs the jazz crowd want to hear your interpretation of the standard NOT a clone of the original......... it gives one latitude to do your own thing in some way but it's greater pressure than say just covering a pop/rock standard cos you expected to create interesting lines yourself not just copy what the original version did......... so your creativity is put to the test every gig . not your note memory ? and that what is fun about jazz. no 2 gigs are ever the same even if you play the same repetoire......

and @ squonk i have a lot of the diana krall cd's if you wanna loan a few .......including the "live in paris" which is extraordinary

Tuck Andress says in his Lessons that he listens to all the instruments and tries to mimic those on guitar.
I like to listen to the phrasing in Sax solos across all genres.

Diana Krall has very high musical values and a great understanding of harmony. Also a fab singer and really, really good piano player. She's much closer to Tony Bennet than to Michael Buble. She has a whole lot going on, more than just her looks, and musically she's very substantial. She ain't no bimbo.

I've seen her playing with small bands quite a lot - trios and quartettes. So that may be another reason for listening to her - the details aren't getting lost in a big production, you can appreciate the harmonic things that she does.
