The Squier production was shifted from Japan to Mexico for a few years in the early/mid '90s. This was basically to downgrade them, as the Japanese Squier models had become serious competition for the US models. Quality of the Mex Squiers is a bit inconsistent at times, but they were basically what later became the MIM standard bodies and necks with cheaper hardware. Once the production started improving, they started making the Fender Standard models in Mexico and shifted Squier to Korea (then Indonesia, China, Taiwan and India).
So, as usual, judge each guitar on it's own merits.
