Supporting local guitarists

Hi All

What do you all think of us on the forum making a combined effort to support some local guitarists at gigs? It can be something fun.

For the Gauteng area: I'm thinking about when there is the next Cox, Newman or Lotz or Patlansky gig or whomever we choose to support we all meet there and represent guitar forum SA. Someone like Norio can then interview the performer and post the interview on the site. I was thinking, if we can get the big names to understand that this is where their fans meet, they might bewilling to contribute to the lessons section and ultimately that will make the site more popular and Norio can sell advertising space. Everyone wins?

I love this idea but I can only make Gauteng gigs and only when I have a car and petrol, so we'd need 1 or 2 more interviewers to volunteer.

I can draw up a set of questions and the interviewer just needs to ask them and send me the MP3.

It would take some work, for sure, but it could be awesome.

I couldnt agree more!

I try to go to as many live gigs here in CT as possible.
When I get a chance I usaully try and speak to the band and tell them about the forum,get an email address and send them a referal link.

So far none of them have joined ....but I'll keep trying..... sooner or later one of them has to sign on and see how awesome this place is!

That is fantastic. I think, if the performers realise how the forum can expose them, they will pay more attention to us and most of them are really nice guys. I think what is important is that we introduce ourselves as "so and so from guitarforum" so that they understand we aren't just fans, we are valuable elements in the industry.

Great idea guys. I might be a little pressed for time availability, but would love to join where I can. Please post the news / dates here on the forum. I would be able to pick up a gang of people with my truck here in Gauteng. We can let Norio stand in the corner and sell T Shirts. Proceeds go to the Norio mobility fund.

I remember going to River Club in CT for "Barleycorn" music nights. New artists and regulars meet and perform on stage. A blast! Dunno if they still do though....

I think the 'Corn faded into obscurity due to bad management, frequent venue changes and member infighting. I do sometimes wonder who ended up with their (mostly crap) gear though.

Barleycorn regular Bill Knight has started up his own acoustic evenings in Capri Village (Fish Hoek). He built a large room on his new house specifically to use as a small venue and built a recording room next to it. All very small and low key, but nice: http://www.billknight.co.za/cottage.htm

The way dispensible income is dropping in this country, I can picture an old 3 speed bicycle with an Ibanez sticker on a rear mudguard mounted guitar rack!

Barleycorn regular Bill Knight has started up his own acoustic evenings in Capri Village (Fish Hoek). He built a large room on his new house specifically to use as a small venue and built a recording room next to it.

Ok well lets get a guest list together. Sure Bill won't mind us all pulling in for a jam lol!

Well, I don't think he's making a fortune, it's only a few nights a month anyway and he seems to be doing it more for the love of it. Small but loyal crowd. He gets some good acts in: Cox, Newman, Gripper, Allison, Kitchen, Lucey, et. al..

He often ends up recording demos for the newer players, which is an additional revenue stream, but I don't think he'll be retiring in luxury soon ?
