Great Songs - The GFSA List

OK... why should Rolling Stone have all the fun? Please post a selection of 10 great SONGS (however you interpret "song" and in your opinion). Just a list of songs. Here are the rules [hr] 1: TEN SONGS 2: No justifications or comments as to why such-and-such a song is great, just TEN SONGS 3: Please list the COMPOSER(S), not the artist who recorded the best known version (so Elvis Presley doesn't get credit for "Hound Dog") 4: You must include MINIMUM four composers or compositional partnerships in your list - this is so that none of us can get too one-track for too long (as I, for one, might). This will hopefully force us to each cast our nets a little wider. 5: ONE list of TEN songs per GFSA member. 6: Please get the titles right so we all know what you're talking about. Enrique Iglesias did NOT sing a song entitled "Hero Baby". 7: No implied ranking. Number 1 on your list is deemed as worthy as number 10. 8: You must be able to show that the composer and the song really exist and the song was recorded. You don't have to do that right now with your submission (and please see rule 2) but in case of a challenge you must be able to show that you picked real songs by real people (so no votes for X-Rated Bob's Unstarted Symphony). [hr] I will collate the lists at the end of September and publish the results. Let's see what we come up with, where there is common ground.

What about refining the rules to include 'must have been influential in one way or another'... that will cut down the obscurities (looking at my list, not yours Keira!).

What's "influential?". Things can be influential - or alleged to be - without being famous. The first Velvet Underground album is widely held to be very influential, but it's not well known.

And does "influential" imply "great"? Idols is influential, but it doesn't produce much in the way of good songs.

Finally, who rules on "influential"? That's a whole subjective debate going on right there.

Better to let the masses vote (assuming they care to).

Several of those aren't songs.

mmm thats a tough one...... cos for me i seldom listen to music with lyrics......almost never ...... and to me yes there's no singing so technically they not songs cos of no human voice.......

and i guess in my opinion i don't differentiate between songs with lyrics and songs that are instrumental.......... so thats my take.........

and to me instrumental music has influenced so much of what music is today ... cos if we only consider vocal music infuencial we cutting out most classical and most jazz much flamenco , celtic, folk music and all the entire big band era ........... and also artists today who choose to be instrumental.......... steve vai ,satriani, ect ect .............

so yeah thats not neccessary technically correct calling a piece of music a song but i do .............. and even on my own cd which is 100% instrumental to me it has songs on it .... where i guess i should be calling em "piece's " or compositions

Ja. Songs have words. However you quote the rules correctly so ...err... ja... has to be allowed.

Personally I wish people would pay more attention to the words and think about the words a bit more. That might result in truly awful things like that official World Cup song getting the derisive laughter they deserve. It might also stop newly wed couples wanting "Every Breath You Take" as their first dance at the wedding.
