☹ , sad news indeed....... :'(
I felt like it may be the worst day in music ever!
Though to look at it from another angle lately they've been driven into a very commercially kinda sound and though they are still amazing I was getting a bit weary of where it was going, Mike Portnoy over saw a lot of the production and that might not have necessarily been a good thing. I'm hoping they go back towards a more "Train Of Thought", "Metropolis" or "A Change Of Seasons" kinda vibe, I know it's a long shot but damn it they're a PROG-Metal band not a METAL-prog band. To all the Dream Theater fans who wan't to console themselves like I did I'd like to point out that all the side-projects Portnoy was involved with sucked (except Liquid Tension Experiment - Which almost was Dream Theater), whereas John Petrucci's solo album was amazing!!!
Mike Portnoy is a great drummer and he will have left big shoes to fill, but I'm sure there are drummers out there who are technically capable of taking the role (feel is a different story). Dream Theater is one of the most respected and loved super musician bands in the world and I'm sure they'll have an endless pick of competent drummers rocking up to try and get the gig, I just hope they pick wisely or get someone like Thomas Lang or Mike Mangini.

@ Warren , buy a Dream Theater dvd , turn up the 5.1 sound and be totally impressed with each members awesomeness 8)
Yes but which one in particular? Their discography is pretty extensive. ?
I vote "Live At Budokan" is probably their tightest and most jaw droppingly amazing, however "Metropolis 2000: Live Scenes From New York" is what got me into them (especially the bonus deleted set - OMG at "A Change Of Seasons")
Album wise I love everything, though "Train Of Thought" really hit the mark for me. I'd suggest that one or "Images and Words" as it's a great way to start if you're not into the heavier stuff.

I rate stay away from the 3 most recent albums. They do still have a couple of sick songs but in my opinion would start with the albums i mentioned above ?
As I said above - a little on the commercial side. I'm really hoping Rudess and Myung will step in and bring the hardcore prog back on!
If the band ended or flopped from this point I will be saddened but I will forever follow my saviour Petrucci, and on the day he ascends his mortal flesh and joins Shawn Lane in that amazing jam they must not be letting the rest of the universe in on I will lay the first brick of the church of Petruccianity where the lessons of the master will be continued on in his absence.
